Lead Pharmacist (Women&Children, Strategy Lead, Research&Development)

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Service Lead Women & Children Pharmacist to lead our clinical pharmacy services within the Women & Children's sector. This role is pivotal in optimizing patient outcomes, minimizing adverse reactions, and enhancing medicines safety. You will drive the broader Medicines Optimisation and Governance Strategy across the Trust, fostering best practices through leadership and collaboration.

Main duties of the job

  • Oversee clinical pharmacy and medicines management services for Women & Children.
  • Manage and mentor a team of pharmacists, ensuring quality service delivery.
  • Develop and implement guidelines to improve prescribing practices.
  • To work closely with the senior pharmacists, clinicians, nursing and midwifery staff and other senior managers to develop pharmaceutical services to patients within the relevant directorates.
  • Lead initiatives for cost-effective prescribing and budget management.
  • To take an active role in committees relating to specialist area e.g. paediatric clinical governance, Neonatal MDT and the Maternity forum.

The post holder will lead on the development and implementation of a strategy for embedding research, developing the culture, and building research capacity within the RLH pharmacy team. The post holder will be required to support others within the department to develop research within both NHS and commercial landscape. The post holder is expected to facilitate grant applications and external funding body

Person SpecificationExperience

  • Extensive post registration acute hospital NHS pharmacy experience working as a clinical pharmacist working with pediatrics and women's health patients.
  • Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care within women and children's services.
  • Operational management of a pharmacy service to a substantial teaching hospital or District General Hospital (DGH) and a complex environment
  • Experience of managing large groups of staff, appraising staff and giving feedback.
  • Experience of successfully planning, leading and implementing service improvement and organisational change projects and managing a budget
  • Ability to undertake and facilitate quality improvement, reflective practice, teaching and CPD
  • Experience as a clinical pharmacy tutor, presenter or lecturer and experience of leading and supervising research, quality improvement or audit projects

Skills

  • Excellent clinical and managerial critical appraisal skills enabling effective decision making relating to the adoption of new therapies. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrates strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and organise self, and others, over short, medium & longer time frames.
  • Ability to understand complex issues, problem solve and propose solutions in appropriate time frame & when under pressure.
  • Good analytical & organisational ability
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with and influence senior medical, nursing staff and senior management.
  • Management of risk in the clinical use of medicines
  • Demonstrates numeracy skills and ability to perform accurate, complex calculations, to complete documentation accurately with attention to details.
  • Able to work unsupervised and under pressure.
  • IT literate; able to use Microsoft office with intermediate IT skills including, accurate data entry and use of specialist computer programmes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills suitable for a range of audiences, including chairing of meetings.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge covering a range of children's & women's services
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives in these patient groups
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply all aspects of regulatory legislation and guidelines
  • Knowledge of issues related to prescribing at the interfaces of primary, secondary and tertiary care.
  • Sound knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in specialty at Mastery/Diploma level
  • Thorough understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk management
  • Knowledge of the law and relevant guidance relating to medicines, pharmacy, rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning
  • Knowledge and awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to the directorate's patients
  • Understanding of stock control systems
  • Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements
  • Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation

Qualifications

  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)
