NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.


The successful applicant would join a friendly team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff and would be responsible for the day to day processing and validation of results from patient samples: blood, urine, faeces, tissue biopsies, CSF and other body fluids in specialist and routine laboratory sections in Biochemistry using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures. The department has a number of highly specialized areas including the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (STEMDRL).

You will provide advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales. You will be responsible for your own work and use specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.

State registration with the HCPC is mandatory for this post along with a BSc Honour’s degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for HCPC registration. It is desirable that you have formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures and evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice. It is essential that you can evidence your continuing professional development and you should have effective written, organizational, verbal and effective keyboard/IT skills.

This is a fixed term post with full-time hours (37 hours per week); these hours will be worked over a 24/7 shift pattern after completion of a suitable training period.
