PhD Research Scientist - Biotechnology required on a permanent basis in Manchester. SRG are working with a highly innovative company who have been creating speciality products for a range of markets, including personal care and cosmetics, for over 30 years. With a focus on developing their natural product development team, they are now seeking a PhD Research Scientist to support in developing natural speciality ingredients from both microbiological and plant sources to launch into the personal care market, specifically hair care. This is an exciting new role, in a growing and developing team, with ideal candidates having recently completed a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology or Biochemistry (or similar), with knowledge of cell cultivation for producing metabolites, and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes. This is an excellent opportunity to develop new products and have a big impact within the company. Candidates with an MSC and proven industrial experience in a research role are also encouraged to apply. Knowledge and/or experience of extraction techniques from natural sources is also desirable

Benefits: You will join a successful business who have ambitious plans to expand their Biotechnology team launching into the personal care market. 37.5 working hours/week, 8.30am and 4.40pm, Mon-Fri. Excellent company pension, with 25 days holiday plus 8 statutory bank holidays.

Role / Description

Develop natural hair care ingredients for the applications team to test
Design and develop processes for the extraction from plant and other bio-based sources to make hair care ingredients.
Design and develop microbial fermentation processes for the production and purification of hair care ingredients.
Develop technical transfer packages for commercial production of ingredients and assist in process transfer.
Conduct analysis using techniques such as HPLC, MS and enzymatic assays.
Plan and progress projects to ensure successful completion.
Accurately record experimental data and produce formal reports
Confidently present data to technical and non-technical audience
Provide technical assistance to other departments in the business, for example participating in discussions with sales, applications and quality teams to aid product development and launch.
Keep up to date with current academic literature and market developments.

Requirements

PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or similar)
An MSc with proven industrial experience in research will also be considered
Understanding of cell cultivation for production of metabolites and/ or cell lysates.
Experience and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes.
Experience and knowledge of developing bio-processes.
Understanding of aseptic technique.
