LOCUM Band 8 Biomedical Scientist – Biochemistry
Location:Durham
Band:8a
Hours:Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Rate:£30 – £40 per hour (dependent on experience)
Contract Type:Locum (initial 3–6 months with potential extension)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for aBand 8 Biomedical Scientistwith specialist expertise inClinical Biochemistryto join a busy and well-equipped NHS laboratory inDurhamon a locum basis.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will support the delivery of a high-quality clinical biochemistry service and provide leadership in technical and quality matters. This role is ideal for an experienced BMS looking for a senior position with the flexibility of a locum contract.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Lead and manage daily operations in the biochemistry department


  • Maintain compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards and contribute to audits and quality assurance


  • Supervise and support junior staff, ensuring training and competency assessments are up to date


  • Assist with analyser maintenance, troubleshooting, and method validation


  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely and accurate results are delivered for patient care


Essential Requirements:



  • HCPC registration as aBiomedical Scientist


  • Extensive post-registration experience inClinical Biochemistry


  • Proven ability to work independently and lead a team


  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and governance


  • Experience using modern automated platforms (e.g., Roche, Abbott, Beckman)


Desirable Skills:



  • MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science or a relevant subject


  • Experience in LIMS and middleware systems


  • Previous locum or Band 8-level experience
