Location: Corsham Science Park

At Cellular Agriculture Ltd, we're on a mission to transform how the world produces protein. Our groundbreaking technology in cultivated meat is designed to make sustainable, ethical, and affordable protein alternatives not only possible-but mainstream. We're tackling some of the most urgent global challenges: food security, climate change, and the sustainability of our agricultural systems.

We're a passionate team of scientists, engineers, and innovators who believe in a better way forward-where next-generation technologies meet real-world impact. If you're inspired by bold ideas, driven by purpose, and excited to be part of a team shaping the future of food, we'd love to hear from you. Together, we are building the tools and systems that will make cultivated meat a viable, sustainable food source for communities around the globe.

We are also deeply committed to inclusion and equity. We believe that diverse perspectives drive better decisions and stronger innovation. We're cultivating a workplace culture where every team member feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to our shared success. Everyone here has a voice-and we use it to build a better future.

What this role entails

As a Senior Bioprocess Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and scaling upstream bioprocesses for cultivated meat production. You will work hands-on with hollow fibre bioreactors, developing protocols that enable consistent, scalable, and high-yield protein production.

This role requires strong collaboration across disciplines-including biology, tissue engineering, biomaterials, and engineering-both within the company and through external partnerships. You will contribute to the full bioprocess development pipeline, from small-scale experimentation to our brand-new pilot plant, driving forward the company's mission of sustainable food innovation.

You will also support project planning, experimental design and documentation ensuring high-quality and timely delivery of technical milestones. This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of cultivated meat technology through rigorous science, creative problem-solving, and cross-functional teamwork.

Objectives

- Design, execute, and optimise scalable bioprocess experiments with hollow fibre bioreactor systems to ensure the seamless transfer to- and execution of bioprocess innovations in the company's cutting-edge pilot plant.

- Generate and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including process specifications, SOPs, and operating manuals, to support quality, reproducibility, and compliance.

- Translate small-scale research into robust, scalable upstream processes by collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and leveraging modelling, automation, and data-driven insights.

- Continuously monitor and evaluate emerging technologies to identify and capitalize on opportunities for bioprocess innovation and development.

- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and provide training and mentorship to junior team members to support their professional development.

Selection Criteria

Experience

- Demonstrable industrial bioprocess development experience
- Substantial experience of performing data analysis using key bioreactor parameters and correlations.
- Proven track record of managing R&D projects, solving complex problems, and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
- Hands-on bioreactor performance analysis and improvement for adherent and suspension cells of different species.
- Independently developed experiments and internal standards to characterise, validate and evaluate bioreactor performance.
- Strong independent work ethic and ability to think creatively to design and optimize bioprocesses.
- Self-motivated with a strong focus on safety, quality, details, and results.

Delivering for an organisation
- Has contributed to the development and validation of upstream bioprocesses for animal or plant cell culture at a range of scales.

Team working
- Demonstrable ability to work with a diverse range of people, working towards a common goal in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Expertise

Essential:

- Masters level or equivalent in bioprocess engineering, biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology or relevant subject area
- Experienced with animal or plant cell bioreactor operation in an industrial environment
- Demonstrates enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong drive to excel.
Preferable:
- PhD in chemical engineering or bioprocess engineering
- Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics or bioprocessing modelling
- Experience with perfusion process cell culture systems eg. using tangential flow filtration (TFF) or packed bed or membrane bioreactors.
- Experience in cultivated meat or industrial biotechnology

The Benefits
In addition to working in a world class facility based in the Corsham science park near Bath within a supportive and inclusive team, you will receive a highly competitive base salary, share options in a growing biotech enterprise, competitive holiday allowance and a fantastic benefits package including pension, Bupa medical cover and life assurance. You will have access to world-class training, development, and networking with organisations across cellular agriculture, and food systems.
