Are you an experienced Technical Project Manager who thrives at the intersection of engineering, science, and programme delivery?
This is a chance to lead the development of cutting-edge diagnostic instrumentation and consumables, working with cross-functional teams across the UK and US to deliver a next-generation molecular diagnostics platform.
The Opportunity
In this role, you’ll support and coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific teams as they design and develop complex medical devices, combining hardware, microfluidics, software, and assay development.
You’ll work closely with senior leadership to maintain alignment with business goals, oversee compliance with contractual deliverables (including US government requirements), and ensure projects remain on time, on budget, and within scope.
The position sits at the heart of the organisation’s technical delivery — making you the key link between R&D, Programme Management, Quality, external partners, and senior executives.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support multi-disciplinary teams across engineering, platform integration, assay development, software, and manufacturing as they develop complex medical devices.

  • Collaborate with Heads of Department and team leads to plan, estimate budgets, and allocate resources for instrument and consumable development.

  • Ensure all contractual deliverables — including routine progress updates — are prepared accurately and on schedule.

  • Support approval, negotiation, administration, and fulfilment of subcontractor agreements in line with internal policies and US regulatory requirements.

  • Identify and resolve cross-functional issues impacting programme delivery.

  • Oversee risk identification, mitigation strategies, and cross-team interdependencies.

  • Maintain compliance with internal SOPs and quality processes.

  • Work across time zones and collaborate with US-based teams as required.

  • Support other project and programme activities as assigned.

About You
You’ll bring strong technical grounding in hardware or fluidics-based medical technologies, alongside proven project management capability within regulated product development.
Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and fluidics principles applied to medical or life science systems.

  • Project/programme management qualifications (PRINCE2, PMP, etc.).

  • Demonstrable experience leading R&D teams developing complex medical devices, consumables, or IVD products.

  • Excellent understanding of regulated development environments (ISO 13485, FDA 510(k), CE IVD).

  • Skilled at navigating interdependencies across large, multi-team programmes.

  • Proficient in MS Project and the Office 365 suite.

  • Familiar with Agile ways of working and tools such as Jira/Atlassian.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.

  • Able to build strong relationships across technical functions and geographies.

  • Highly organised, delivery-driven, and motivated.

Working Pattern

  • Primarily on-site in London, with hybrid flexibility.

  • Occasional travel to the US may be required.

  • Flexibility around working hours to collaborate with US-based colleagues on occasion.

What’s on Offer

  • Influence the development of a next-generation diagnostic platform with significant real-world impact

  • Work closely with senior leadership and global project teams

  • Opportunity to shape process, delivery, and technical outcomes in a growing organisation

  • Competitive salary + benefits

How Many Biotechnology Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Biotech Job?

If you are trying to break into biotechnology or progress your career, it can feel like the list of tools you are expected to know is endless. One job advert asks for PCR, another mentions cell culture, another lists bioinformatics pipelines, automation platforms or GMP systems. LinkedIn makes it worse, with people sharing long skills lists that make you wonder if you are already behind. Here is the reality most biotech employers will not say out loud: they are not hiring you because you know every tool. They are hiring you because you understand biological systems, can work accurately and safely, follow protocols, interpret results and contribute reliably to a team. Tools matter, but only when they support those outcomes. So how many biotechnology tools do you actually need to know to get a job? The answer depends on the role you are targeting, but for most job seekers it is far fewer than you think. This article breaks down what employers really expect, which tools are essential, which are role-specific, and how to focus your learning so you look employable rather than overwhelmed.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Biotechnology Job Applications (UK Guide)

Hiring managers in biotechnology do not start by reading your CV word for word. They scan for credibility, relevance and risk. In a regulated, evidence-driven sector like biotech, the first question is simple: is this person safe, competent and genuinely capable of contributing in this environment? Whether you are applying for roles in research, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, clinical, bioinformatics or commercial biotech, the strongest applications make the right signals obvious in the first 10–20 seconds. This in-depth guide explains exactly what hiring managers in UK biotechnology look for first, how they assess CVs, cover letters and portfolios, and why capable candidates are often rejected. Use it as a practical checklist before you apply.
