At Basecamp Research we're looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join our team.

About Us
At Basecamp Research, we tap the planet’s unexplored biodiversity to solve some of biotechnology’s hardest problems and show the enormous value hidden in nature.
We have built one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing metagenomic datasets, sourced from our global expeditions and partnerships. Using this extensive resource, our team runs petascale deep learning and bioinformatics pipelines across cloud and HPC infrastructure to uncover novel enzymes, explore new biology, and solve complex biotechnology challenges for our partners. We have a strong focus on automation and scalability, enabling us to keep pace with our rapid growth and focus on high impact technical challenges.
We work closely with some of the most renowned tech companies and organisations, including NVIDIA, The Broad Institute (Harvard), Microsoft and AWS.
We’re an inclusive, flexible workplace, where biologists, engineers, data and machine‑learning scientists, and field explorers are united by a sense of adventure and a belief that nature has already designed the solutions to our planet’s greatest challenges, we just need to uncover them!
If you feel passionate about the power of biology to show the inherent value of nature and to build a better world, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Platform Engineer to join the team. The role will be full-time, based physically in our central London office.
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you’ll own our hybrid Kubernetes fleet (on-prem + AWS) and build the self-service infrastructure that empowers biologists and ML engineers to work more effectively. You’ll report to the Platform Engineering Lead, drive security and reliability improvements, and architect new tooling to streamline operations.
You will be working alongside leading data scientists, bioinformaticians, and ML scientists, to build the largest and most diverse metagenomic dataset known to the industry. You will be instrumental in building and scaling our infrastructure to leverage our data asset for next generation therapeutics, deep learning models, and some of the industries toughest biotechnology challenges.

About you
Own and operate our on-premise and cloud environments, in particular our Kubernetes clusters (security, monitoring, upgrades and automation)

Experience working with Deep Learning workloads, training models, serving models through inference platforms and optimising hardware and systems for models.

Fluency of at least one coding language (Python, Go or similar) with experience of building and deploying applications on top of Kubernetes.

Passion for automating manual and repetitive tasks (configuration, patching, etc.) using Terraform, Ansible or similar

Curiosity about biotechnology and working with enormous biological datasets and systems

Ability to work across the stack to troubleshoot and diagnose problems (from application logs down to TCP/IP)

Deep knowledge of Linux and container based systems and how they work (namespaces, CNI, networking etc.)

Experience operating clusters of NVIDIA GPUs and complex networking configurations (IB, High-speed fabrics, multiple CNIs etc.)

At least 4 years of experience in industry working with the above tools and technologies.
Nice to Haves
Experience with other parts of our tech stack (Clickhouse, Postgres, Datadog, Dagster, Temporal, AWS, Gitlab and RunAI)

Any domain knowledge within Life Sciences and Biotech/Techbio, specifically around high throughput sequencing, ML models, and bioinformatics.
What we can offer in return
The opportunity to be a key member in an exciting, dynamic, and fast-moving field.

A fun, flexible, and supportive work environment in the centre of London, and an emphasis on collaboration and personal development.

Highly collaborative culture, we always work cross team and cross function, with engineers, data scientists, and biologists working directly together to tackle complex issues.

Competitive compensation including equity

Comprehensive medical cover with AXA

Critical Illness and Group Income Protection

Pension Scheme

Generous PTO

Enhanced parental policy

Childcare scheme with YellowNest

Bike2Work Scheme
