Main duties of the job

Cellular Pathology invites applications for the post of Senior Healthcare Scientist – (Specimen Dissection / Cut-up, Specimen Reception & Referrals) to join our friendly forward-thinking team within a busy and continually developing department.

The primary responsibility of this role will be to manage & oversee specimen dissection / cut-up, specimen reception & our referrals pathway within the histopathology laboratory.

This post is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced individual to contribute to a rapidly developing specimen

dissection service. The post also presents opportunity for personal development, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is actively

supported. The laboratory is IBMS approved for training and is UKAS accredited.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The Cellular Pathology service operates a 6-day week service (Monday to Saturday) between the hours of 06:00 - 19:00, and includes working on selected Bank Holidays.

Cellular Pathology includes Neuropathology, Paediatric pathology, Immunohistochemistry, Digital Pathology, Research Histology and also incorporates the departments of Diagnostic Cytology, Biomedical Imaging and provision of Mortuary services to the hospital, City Council and local Coroners. There is also a dedicated suite to support the delivery of the Mohs service within the Trust

The department is integrated with the University of Southampton's department of pathology which has a major role in medical student education

and has active research programs in both applied and basic experimental pathology.

Approximately 52,000 histology specimens and 3,000 diagnostic cytology samples are currently received and processed annually.

  • You will be responsible for leading the specimen reception, cut up & referral pathways within the department.
  • In conjunction with the Specimen Dissection Operation Lead and Senior Lead in Cut-up, the post holder will participate in the strategic development of the sections and in staff training and development.
  • You will ensure that UKAS standards within own area of responsibility are maintained, including the preparation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and training documentation.
  • You will need to be an excellent communicator & be able to work effectively as part of large team.
  • You will need to be able to prioritise workload & adjust to accommodate unexpected events &/or changes in demands.
  • The Cellular Pathology service operates a 6-day week service (Monday to Saturday) between the hours of 06:00 - 19:00, and includes working on selected Bank Holidays which requires a flexible approach to the hours of employment.
  • You will need to be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence of current CPD activities
  • MSc or equivalent level of knowledge in relevant discipline
  • Specialist portfolio in relevant discipline or experience demonstrating an equivalent level of knowledge / experience relevant to the role
  • Experience of working at band 6 level (or equivalent) to include the ability to provide supervision / leadership and troubleshoot non-routine issues as they arise

  • Experience in a large acute hospital laboratory
  • IT competency (hospital IT systems, outlook, Microsoft)
