About the role

Institute of Health Informatics is looking to appoint a full time Research Fellow – Health Data Scientist with a focus in phenome wide studies to join our welcoming and vibrant Institute.

This position presents a unique opportunity to join a team of experienced health data scientists, informaticians, statisticians and clinical epidemiologists and contribute significantly to the statistical analysis and presentation of results from large scale national and rich local health record data resources. The Research Fellow – Health Data Scientist will work on one or more exciting projects involving analysis of large scale electronic health record data including the BHF Data Science Centre, UK Biobank, Our Future Health, and the UCL-GSK Phenomics Hub and others. They will work within secure data environments to create and evaluate phenotyping algorithms and phenome-wide approaches leveraging structured linked electronic health record data. Duties will involve using Python (or R) to develop detailed analytic plans and undertake statistical analyses for evaluating phenotypes and comparing results across data sources, and generating efficient, reproducible code which can be used in different datasets.

The post is full-time ( hours per week) and the post is funded until 31 December , further funding may become available.

Appointment at Grade 7 (£43, - £51, per annum) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (£38, – £41, per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

About you

The Research Fellow must have a PhD in a relevant discipline or similar level of experience in an academic and/or industry setting as well excellent knowledge of the Python scientific programming stack. The role holder will have experience of manipulating and analysing large, high-dimensional electronic health record datasets and practical knowledge of medical ontologies ( SNOMED-CT, ICD-10).
