Job Description
Job Outline:
We have an excellent opportunity for an engineer to grow their career within an international technology oriented company. The successful candidate will be supported with learning plans, developing their skills to proactively influence the product at design stage, and through production. The optical engineer is responsible for designing and developing economical new processes, plants/equipment or modifying existing ones, to ensure the Company operates at the forefront of technology, as efficiently and as cost effectively as possible, under guidance and supervision.
Key Responsibilities

:
To define robust and consistent manufacturing processes to achieve quality standards and cost targets

To maintain knowledge and awareness of relevant emerging technologies, processes and standards

To establish and maintain strong working links with internal and external Development, Engineering and Commercial functions

To undertake cost estimate and variance analysis to ensure competitive pricing and desired margin achievement

To manage product configuration control in line with customer expectations and company procedures

To attend all learning and development opportunities provided by the Company

To understand and fully comply with the national and international export, import and ITAR rules and legislation.

To learn and apply Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques in the pursuit of Continuous Improvement

Assess processes for their relevance, and the adequacy of engineering equipment

Design, install and commission new production processes, monitoring modifications and upgrades, and troubleshooting existing processes

Ensure the process works at the optimum level, to the right rate and quality of output, in order to meet supply needs

Gather data and measurements directly, as well as collecting and interpreting data from the other technical and operating staff involved

Ensure that all aspects of an operation or process meet specification and comply with any legislation Manage the interface between design and manufacturing on new product development, working closely with other specialists, including: design engineers, engineers responsible for plant maintenance (in-house and external), commercial colleagues on product specifications and production schedules, and production operators

Work within project time and cost targets agreed for new product development and in house optical operations.

Promote a positive and progressive attitude in all work activities

Instruct and train other employees

Ensure safe working conditions and compliance with health and safety legislation

Personal Specification:
It is essential that all candidates have the following:
Experience of utilising CNC programs is essential as is the processing of precision optical surfaces and metrology.

Grinding and polishing experience would be advantageous, as would be the ability to write technical reports.

A high standard of general education, and conversant with Microsoft office applications - Word, Excel and PowerPoint. and should be comfortable with scientific methods

An engineering or scientific bias – providing the ability to have a technically credible dialog with the engineering and production teams.

Familiarity with lean manufacturing methodologies supported by Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (as a minimum) Certification

Sound commercial acumen, confidence and professionalism with excellent communication and interpersonal skills providing the ability to represent the manufacturing engineering department at all levels.

High motivation, responsiveness and focus, also possessing meticulous attention to detail – crucial for ensuring demanding manufacturing process requirements are fully understood and met.

It would be desirable if candidates could demonstrate the following:
Comprehensive working knowledge of Mechanical or Electrical standards required for high precision manufacturing

Familiarity with continuous improvement and lean manufacturing methodologies

Knowledge of interferometry and profilometry, along with experience of polishing materials and associated processes

Relevant Engineering qualifications

Knowledge / experience in AS9100/ISO9001 quality environment
