Microbiologist | Series B BioTech Startup | £32M+ Raised 💰

📍 Location: London, UK (Onsite)

💰 Salary: £70,000 – £100,000

About the Opportunity

We’re proud to be partnered with a Series B BioTech startup that’s transforming the future of microbial engineering through automation, AI, and next-generation bioprocessing.

Having raised over £32 million from top-tier investors, this company is entering a major growth phase — scaling its intelligent platform that accelerates strain design, process optimisation, and sustainable production of high-value bioproducts.

This is a rare opportunity to join an ambitious team of scientists, engineers, and data specialists who are redefining what’s possible in synthetic biology and industrial biotech.

The Role

As a Microbiologist, you’ll play a central role in developing, scaling, and optimising microbial workflows that bridge biology, automation, and data science.

Working closely with interdisciplinary teams, you’ll design and execute experiments that advance microbial strain development, improve fermentation performance, and generate insights that fuel product innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead microbial cultivation, fermentation, and optimisation across a range of species (e.g., E. coli, B. subtilis, yeasts, lactic acid bacteria*).
  • Develop and validate assays, workflows, and media formulations to support strain and process improvement.
  • Partner with automation and computational biology teams to ensure data quality, traceability, and integration.
  • Drive milestone-based R&D projects from design to delivery, balancing creativity with rigour.
  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to lab scale-up, infrastructure, and documentation best practices.

About You

Education & Experience

  • MSc or PhD in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • 2+ years of industry or translational research experience in microbial R&D, bioprocess, or metabolic engineering.

Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with microbial cultivation, media optimisation, and strain improvement.
  • Familiarity with automation platforms, bioreactor systems, or data-driven experimentation.
  • Bonus: exposure to anaerobic strains, high-throughput workflows, or Python/R scripting.

Soft Skills

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Curious, self-motivated, and passionate about translating biology into real-world innovation.

Why Join?

🌍 High Impact – Contribute to breakthrough microbial innovations shaping sustainable biomanufacturing.

🚀 Ownership & Autonomy – Influence scientific direction and contribute to company-wide decisions.

💡 Cutting-Edge Science – Work with world-class experts and state-of-the-art lab automation.

📈 Growth Potential – Join post-Series B as the company scales globally, offering rapid career progression.

How Many Biotechnology Tools Do You Need to Know to Get a Biotech Job?

If you are trying to break into biotechnology or progress your career, it can feel like the list of tools you are expected to know is endless. One job advert asks for PCR, another mentions cell culture, another lists bioinformatics pipelines, automation platforms or GMP systems. LinkedIn makes it worse, with people sharing long skills lists that make you wonder if you are already behind. Here is the reality most biotech employers will not say out loud: they are not hiring you because you know every tool. They are hiring you because you understand biological systems, can work accurately and safely, follow protocols, interpret results and contribute reliably to a team. Tools matter, but only when they support those outcomes. So how many biotechnology tools do you actually need to know to get a job? The answer depends on the role you are targeting, but for most job seekers it is far fewer than you think. This article breaks down what employers really expect, which tools are essential, which are role-specific, and how to focus your learning so you look employable rather than overwhelmed.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Biotechnology Job Applications (UK Guide)

Hiring managers in biotechnology do not start by reading your CV word for word. They scan for credibility, relevance and risk. In a regulated, evidence-driven sector like biotech, the first question is simple: is this person safe, competent and genuinely capable of contributing in this environment? Whether you are applying for roles in research, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, clinical, bioinformatics or commercial biotech, the strongest applications make the right signals obvious in the first 10–20 seconds. This in-depth guide explains exactly what hiring managers in UK biotechnology look for first, how they assess CVs, cover letters and portfolios, and why capable candidates are often rejected. Use it as a practical checklist before you apply.
