The Recipe (About the Role)

The primary objective of this role is to minimise the risk of microbiological contamination in our products, ensuring the safety of our consumers and protecting our business. You will serve as the go-to expert in Microbiology, addressing business needs related to this field and spearheading our Microbiology risk assessment program.

  • Serve as the microbiology expert, collaborating with stakeholders to enhance food safety.
  • Promote food safety through HACCP and best practices in cleaning and sanitation.
  • Provide technical microbiology support for audits, specifications, customer queries, and best practice sharing.
  • Identify and mitigate emerging microbiological risks.
  • Manage non-compliant results with clear recommendations for business decisions.
  • Enhance lab methodologies and testing programs to maintain industry standards.
  • Oversee microbiology lab operations, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and accreditation.
  • Conduct various microbiological tests, including occasional weekend work.
The Ingredients (What we need from you)

Key Skills

  • Proficient in microbiological testing methods and analytical equipment validation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Fully qualified Microbiologist.
  • A strong academic foundation in biological sciences, ideally with a degree in microbiology.
  • Significant laboratory/food safety experience.
  • Deep understanding of microbiological principles, food safety standards, and contamination control.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of UKAS and RSA accreditation requirements and how to maintain compliance.
  • In depth scientific and technical understanding of industry-standard micro test methods, analytical systems, and risk assessment procedures.
  • Experience of developing, validating, trouble-shooting micro methods.
  • At least 3 years of Microbiology/Laboratory/food safety/ experience.
  • Experience with an FMCG business.
