Applicationsare invited for the post of Locum Consultant Vascular & EndovascularSurgeon. Applicants should have full GMC registration and be successful inthe Intercollegiate Specialty exam (or equivalent). It is essential that theapplicant has significant endovascular experience. The post is full-time withan indicative 10PA job-plan, although consideration will be given to applicantswishing to work less than full time.
TheSTSFT Vascular Directorate was created following the regional re-organisationof vascular services in 2019. It provides a sub-regional service to Sunderland,North Durham, Bishop Auckland and South Tyneside covering a population ofaround 900,000.
Imagedintervention is performed in both our dedicated vascular hybrid theatre (GEAllia 740i) and angiosuite located in Radiology (Siemens Artis Zee-Q). Althoughthe endovascular service is largely surgeon-led/delivered with dedicated weeklyjob-planned sessional allocations in both facilities, we remain well-supportedby the local interventional radiology team with excellent workingrelationships. The existing Consultant Vascular Surgeons provide a routinecomprehensive open surgical service (including renal access) but not all areendovascular-competent. It is expected that the successful applicant willassist in addressing this and facilitate further development of ourendovascular service.
Main duties of the job
Thesuccessful applicant will become part of our team of 8.5 WTE VascularConsultants. The post will be predominately based at the Sunderland RoyalHospital (SRH) hub, with requirement for emergency cover and/or electiveclinical sessions at University Hospital of North Durham, Durham TreatmentCentre, Bishop Auckland & South Tyneside General Hospital spokesites.
Inpatientservices are based at the SRH arterial hub with our own 24-bedded Vascular ward(C36). Cross-sectional imaging support is provided at all sites with specialisedvascular sonography at both SRH & UHND. The ambulatory venous service isprovided at both SRH & DTC.
Thedepartment is currently developing streamlined pathways for the management ofspecific conditions and the input of the new post holder to further developthese vascular pathways would be essential. A good working relationship withinterventional radiology/nephrology colleagues to develop an integratedapproach to progressing the endovascular service would be encouraged.

AHospital Consultant has continuous responsibility for any patient under his orher care.
Finaljob plans will be agreed in discussion between the successful candidates andthe Clinical Director and will be subject to Annual Review.
Somesessions, in particular audit and teaching sessions will be worked flexibly andthere will be the opportunity to revise the fixed procedural sessionaltimetable to accommodate other commitments of the appointee. The post holder isexpected to attend monthly Directorate & Clinical Governance meetings.
The post holder will be expected to develop the service inkeeping with national guidance and the Local Modernisation and Reform Grouppriorities/targets.
Consultant performance is monitored within the Directorateand strong emphasis is given to personal career development.
Thepost holder will be expected to have expertise in the comprehensive managementof standard vascular pathologies (aortic, carotid, renal access, peripheralarterial & venous), both planned and unplanned. Endovascular experience(both angiosuite and hybrid-theatre based) commensurate with Day 1 Consultantindependent practice is essential.
Withthe other vascular surgeons, the appointee will be expected to provide standardelective and emergency arterial services (including renal access), venousdisease management, and endovascular/hybrid procedures with associated care.The job plan will incorporate dedicated independent angiosuite and hybridendovascular theatre sessions. Additional recognised responsibilities whichcome with their own PA allocation will be reflected within the job plan.
Thesuccessful candidate will be expected to take part in the vascular emergencyon-call rota, accepting out-of-hours referrals with a frequency of 1 in 9/10.They will have elective sessions at Sunderland Royal Hospital (arterial centre)and other network spoke sites on a weekly basis. The appointee will undertakeadministrative duties associated with the running of his/her clinical work andwill be job planned to do so.
Thenew consultant will be involved in complex clinical and management decisionmaking in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Theappointee will be expected to undergo all mandatory training according to trustpolicy.
Person Specification
Qualifications
FRCS or equivalent.
Primary medical qualification.
Full GMC registration.
Higher professional degree, MD, PhD or equivalent.
