An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust with expertise in Paediatric ophthalmology and adult motility. We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team of 24 Ophthalmic Consultants at Queen’s Medical Centre working together to make a difference to Ophthalmology services within Nottingham and beyond.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and be on the GMC Specialist Register for surgical Ophthalmology or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

The Ophthalmology unit offers a comprehensive range of routine and specialist ophthalmic services and the post-holder will be expected to play an active role in the development and provision of the Paediatric ophthalmology and adult motility sub-specialty services for patients at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Please note the DCC (clinical and admin) and SPA activity for this position generates a job plan in total of 10 PAs. The allocation and number of PAs will be discussed with candidates at interview.

Main duties of the job

This post is a 12 month fixed term NUH locum Consultant post in Ophthalmology with special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and adult motility, to complement a dynamic team. The successful candidate would have timetabled clinic, Eye Casualty and SPA sessions.

A full range of Ophthalmology patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

The department has a range of teaching and training commitments for medical students, specialist trainees, nurses, allied health professionals and other visiting doctors. The appointee will be expected to contribute to this educational activity from time to time.

Person specificationProfessional Registration

  • Full GMC registration
  • Eligible to be included on the specialist register
  • Evidence of progression towards CCT

Professional Qualifications

  • FRCS/FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Higher professional degree, ChM, DM, PhD or equivalent

Clinical Skills / Experience

  • Full general ophthalmic surgical training with extensive experience of general ophthalmology with sub-specialty expertise in Medical Retina and/or Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Fellowship level in Medical Retina and / or Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Fellowship in another supporting specialty

Management Skills

  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
  • Able to work in a team
  • Experience of change management

Teaching, Audit and Research

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit
  • Evidence of participation in clinical research
  • Able to teach and support junior staff effectively
  • Original research publications
  • Higher teaching degree/qualification/training
