Laboratory Technician
Elmdon, Birmingham
Main Function / Purpose of Job:
Supporting the Laboratory Manager and reporting on key measures. Performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations. Carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses as required. Preparing specimens and samples. Disposing of chemicals and waste products safely. Constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment, for example gloss meters, microscopes and tensile machines; Performing measurements using traditional measurement equipment micrometers, calipers, DTIs etc. Performing laboratory testing using a variety of test equipment. Analysing data / using statistical techniques to evaluate product and generate informative reports. Using computers and performing mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs; Recording and sometimes interpreting results to present to senior colleagues Preparing reports. Using problem solving techniques to assist in internal & external quality concerns – using multifunctional team support. Supporting at customer sites when required. Following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks
Main missions and results:
Assisting in the control and maintenance of the laboratory facility and equipment. Assisting in the control and maintenance of laboratory records in line requirements. Performing quality control checks in line with specified schedule. Assisting in 5s in the Laboratory facility and associated areas.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Ability to work unsupervised, using on your own initiative to achieve objectives. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to learn specific, practical techniques and apply this knowledge. Ability to use technical equipment accurately. Ability to review data and generate informative reports. Make informed decisions based on data and risk evaluation. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to maintain and calibrate technical equipment. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels. PC literate, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Good numeracy skills. Previous experience of working in the automotive sector is desirable. Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment is desirable. Knowledge of plastic injection moulding, slush moulding, paint and assembly high volume processes is desirable. Working knowledge of problem solving techniques is desirable. Working knowledge of statistical techniques is desirable.
