Key Responsibilities
Duties will be co-ordinated by the Senior Laboratory Technicians as suits the expertise of the technicians. Possible areas are outlined below.
- Liaising with staff about requirements for practicals and planning of assessed practicals in discussion with departments.
- Preparation and laying out of equipment for practical lessons including safe handling of hazardous chemicals and making up solution to precise concentrations.
- Testing and basic repairs of equipment
- Construction of equipment, and sourcing equipment for upcoming practicals. Including monitoring stock levels and purchasing required equipment/ resources.
- Aiding in setup of IT equipment including iPads.
- Purchasing of appropriate supplies as required.
- Completing and updating risk assessment worksheets as required.
- Maintaining a safe and tidy work environment, including cleaning up after practical lessons, maintaining equipment, and ensuring tidiness in the lab technicians work base.
- To complete relevant health and safety training and update relevant documentation.
- To attend meetings and complete mandatory training in accordance with the colleges meeting/training schedule
- To assist at the colleges Open Evenings / Consultation Evenings
- Each member of the College will take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself/herself and persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions at work.
- To undertake any other duties as may be assigned commensurate with the grade and overall responsibility level of the post and as changing circumstances may require.
Salary Information
Point 9 – 11, £24,442 to £26,097 per annum (actual payable £19,647.61 to £20,977.97 per annum depending on experience)
Carmel College is a Catholic sixth form college located in St. Helens, Merseyside. The college mainly specialises in Level 3 education. Currently, over 2000 students are enrolled at the College, most are enrolled on A Level qualifications, a smaller number on BTEC qualifications, a very small number on GCSE Maths and English Language resit qualifications, and on an Art Foundation course at Level 4 (offered in partnership with University of the Arts, London), and a larger number on a range of Foundation Degree courses at Level 5 (offered in partnership with The University of Liverpool). There is also a small, well established Foundation Learning provision at the College, offering Entry Level and Level 1 qualifications.
Young people progress to the College from over 100 different schools, approximately 50% of students coming from the boroughs of St Helens and Knowsley and the remaining 50% from the wider Merseyside conurbation. The college is a member of the Sixth Form Colleges Association, the Maple Group (13 high performing sixth form colleges), the Association of Catholic Sixth Form Colleges, and of Merseyside Colleges, the Archdiocese of Liverpool School Improvement Trust, and finally, St Helens Chamber. We have formal partnerships with The University of Liverpool and University of the Arts, London.
