Job Description

This is a full time, permanent position working a flexible 40 hour week. The role is a hybrid working pattern of 3 days per week onsite, when not travelling. Travel will be one week out of four, internationally across Europe or Saudi Arabia.

The purpose of this role is to provide and maintain an effective and safe working environment that complies with environmental, health and safety legislation. The Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) Specialist will contribute to the effective management of the environmental, health and safety (EHS) program. The role will apply technical knowledge to identify areas for improvement and implement changes in a collaborative manner. The role requires good knowledge in multiple EHS disciplines (e.g. environmental and safety permitting, chemical safety, biosafety, radiation safety and other physical agents, laboratory safety, fire safety, ergonomics, facilities safety, sustainability, auditing and inspection).

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains site EHS programs including record keeping
  • Develops and reviews sites policies and procedures
  • Conducts internal audits and inspections
  • Completes and reviews risk assessments
  • Ensures that accident investigations are undertaken by managers, providing support where necessary and ensuring improvement strategies are recommended and actioned.
  • Provide EHS guidance and training to new team members
  • Attend Safety Committee meetings and other cross-functional team meetings
  • Manages regulatory licences including environmental permits and regulated chemical licences
  • Supports and initiates EHS sub-team projects
  • Assists with Global EHS programs and collaborations across sites
  • Participates in the site emergency response teams
  • Coordination and completion of assigned EHS projects, supporting the development of sustainable, robust and compliant EHS strategies and systems with associated policies and procedures.
  • Be a visible leader of EHS initiatives and drive in EHS forums/initiatives, as well as promotion of Positive EHS Culture
  • Ensure collection of EHS KPI’s for all supported sites on a regular basis
  • Perform risk assessments and audits across the supported sites on a regular basis ensuring that all site activities are being managed in line with legal and corporate requirements
  • Support local managers to complete investigations of EHS incidents and corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Highlight training requirements and improve the safety culture through training and awareness
  • Monitor adherence to company policies and check effectiveness of current policies that are in place
  • Carry out PSS EHS inductions, manual handling and ergonomic training as required.
  • Promote positive EHS culture and awareness within the client organisation, through participation and clear visibility and alignment on assigned project goals, targets and achievements.
  • Advise client management on Environmental health and safety laws, regulations and directives which affect the client and their employees.
  • Participate in Environment & Sustainability Projects throughout Europe (where required)
  • Reviewing and improving commercial work practices. Responsible for identifying areas where efficiencies may be improved and liaising with the customer appropriately about any proposed improvements.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or Life Science related discipline
  • Environmental, Health or Safety qualification e.g. NEBOSH certificate, IOSH, ASP
  • degree or diploma in microbiology / chemistry or a related subject.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a pharmaceutical industry GMP laboratory.
  • Level 6 diploma in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health & Safety.
  • At least 3 years’ technical experience in EHS and a proven track record of developing EHS compliance programs, with exposure to chemical and/or biological agents in the Pharmaceutical industry or related industry.
  • Technical knowledge of OEL’s and product containment
  • Clear understanding of the needs of cGMP
  • Ability to work in a multidiscipline team but also possesses self-motivation and drive.
  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and regulations.
  • Experience of chemical/biological agents risk assessment and occupational monitoring is essential.
  • Experience in conducting EHS audits.
  • Excellent organisational skills and good commercial acumen.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to drive improvements.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and a proactive attitude to solving any lab issues by liaising with management and offering solutions where appropriate.
  • Superlative team player, organised, accurate, have strong documentation skills
  • Passionate about quality and customer service.
  • Good communication skills both internally and externally.
