The Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Practitioner is an autonomous specialist working within a multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for the coordination and management of a clinical research portfolio, including in-house, national, and international phase II and III clinical trials in oncology and haematology malignancies.

Responsibilities include educating patients and colleagues, coordinating patient care on trials, collecting and preparing biological samples, collecting trial data, and monitoring side effects of treatments. The post holder will develop specialized skills related to clinical trials, therapies, and disease sites, and will enable patients to make informed decisions about trial participation by providing advice and acting as their advocate.

Research Responsibilities

  • Apply critical appraisal skills to evaluate research protocols.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining databases.
  • Consult with investigators, research organizations, and industry on protocol development and delivery.
  • Develop knowledge of preclinical data and rationale for testing investigational agents in humans.
  • Ensure trial case report forms comply with ICH GCP guidelines and are completed timely.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to meet patient needs during various healthcare stages.
  • Identify potential trial patients.
  • Ensure pre-study tests are completed and results obtained.
  • Act as patient advocate, assisting with informed consent and ongoing trial participation.
  • Register and randomize patients onto study protocols.
  • Participate in treatment decisions per protocol.
  • Provide direct patient care within the trial scope, including history taking, toxicity and response evaluation, and administration of experimental agents.
  • Collect and prepare biological samples as per protocol.
