Description of role:

Yourgene Health, part of the Novacyt Group, are recruiting for a Laboratory Technician to join our genomic services team based at Manchester Science Park. The role of the Laboratory Technician is to support high-quality and regulatory compliant Genomic Research, Clinical and Validation Services offered by Yourgene Genomic Services and to ensure that the laboratory environment is operating effectively and safely in accordance with instruction provided by the Laboratory Manager.


Key areas of responsibility:

Sample Logistics

  • Receipt of reagent and sample deliveries
  • Booking in of sample deliveries onto LIMS
  • Stock transfers from/to goods inwards
  • Dispatch of samples to clients


Administration Tasks

  • Communicating with clients to notify of sample receipt/shipments
  • Indexing, filing and archiving of client reports
  • Support equipment management


Stock Control

  • To ensure minimum stock levels of all reagents and consumables are maintained according to forecasts provided by the Laboratory Manager
  • Responsible for maintaining laboratory
  • Responsible for ensuring stock rotation is performed
  • Support the purchasing of stock items and general stock traceability
  • Supporting central logistics to move stock


Quality

  • To carry out all activities in accordance with the relevant quality standard
  • To liaise with the Quality Department and be familiar with the Quality Manual to ensure correct documentation and SOPs are in place and report non-conformances to ensure continual improvement.
  • To comply with all health and safety and COSHH systems.


Sample Processing

  • To contribute to providing a profitable routine scientific and applications service in line with the regulatory, quality and scientific expectations
  • To perform basic activities and QC procedures as directed by the Laboratory Manager and/or Project Manager in accordance with written procedures.
  • To support and service the laboratory functions:
  • Undertake laboratory tasks as assigned
  • Coordinate removal of hazardous waste from laboratory areas
  • Removal and disposal of cardboard waste from store rooms and laboratory areas
  • Defrosting/cleaning fridges and freezers as required
  • Collection of used glassware and plasticware from laboratories
  • Autoclaving laboratory reagents/solutions, glassware and plastic ware
  • Cleaning and essential maintenance of washroom equipment
  • Support other laboratory duties e.g., manufacturing and other duties within reason


Communication

  • To communicate effectively, professionally, and promptly so that all relevant information is forwarded to the appropriate personnel on a regular and timely basis
  • To participate in internal meetings, visits, and audits as and when appropriate and communicate any information back to the appropriate personnel

Other

  • To undertake any other task that may be reasonably asked by the management which is consistent with the skill base or previous employment history of the employee


Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of a degree in a Science related subject (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics or similar) or experience of working in a science-related environment for 2 years.
  • Experience handling clinical samples for testing.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Previous laboratory experience required.
  • Good administration skills required including the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using Q-Pulse or similar QMS preferred.
  • Experience working in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory desirable.
