To be an efficient, flexible member of the Cellular Pathology laboratory providing a high-quality service to Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
To maintain the required levels of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice, as specified in local and national guidelines.
To work with biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the provision of a comprehensive and effective Cellular Pathology service for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as directed by the Head of the Department.
To participate in the efficient handling, processing, and analysis of samples in the laboratory, under supervision.
To maintain effective records of all activities and procedures, and to contribute towards the maintenance of the laboratory's quality system.
To check, keep clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
To carry out supervised laboratory procedures in all sections of the laboratory, as directed by the Head of the Unit and senior scientific staff.
To undergo appropriate teaching and training as directed and necessary to maintain HPC registration and to keep suitable records of all training activities undertaken.
Main duties of the job 1. Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.
2. Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Healthcare Scientist.
3. Develop and improve your professional expertise.
4. More experienced Healthcare Scientists will be expected to supervise unqualified staff and deputise for section leaders when necessary.
5. Provides specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit.

Job responsibilities MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communication and Relationship Skills 1.1 Demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives, and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.
1.2 Contribute towards sharing good practice within the department and Trust-wide.
1.3 Promote a positive image of the Trust at all times.
1.4 Work cohesively with all members of the department team to ensure the best services are provided.
1.5 Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
1.6 Provide and receive complex information to inform colleagues or external contacts, including advice, explanation of results, and instructions.
1.7 Communicate and record any difficulties, problems, accidents, or incidents affecting the department promptly.
2. Responsibility - Scientific and Technical Duties 2.1 Become proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department to provide comprehensive and appropriate laboratory services.
2.2 Perform duties independently at a level requiring decision-making, with support from senior or medical staff when needed.
2.3 Organize own work tasks or activities.
2.4 Ensure all work is completed timely and to standards, seeking advice when required.
2.5 Maintain safe working practices according to SOPs.
2.6 Assist in maintaining internal and external quality assurance.
2.7 Validate reports using judgmental expertise where necessary.
2.8 Authorize reports when responsible, following local policies.
2.9 Ensure documentation is maintained appropriately, including electronic records.
2.10 Demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, promoting this to others.
2.11 Identify and report clinical and non-clinical risks for appropriate action.
3. Responsibility - Policy and Service 3.1 Actively implement Trust policies and procedures at the department level.
3.2 Maintain and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills, using the Trust's Performance Review System.
3.3 Record and report incidents/complaints involving staff, patients, and visitors, assisting investigations as needed.
3.4 Ensure all NWL Pathology laboratory sites gain and maintain accreditation/inspection status from relevant bodies.
4. Responsibility - Financial and Physical Resources 4.1 Assist in maintaining stock levels.
4.2 Assist in developing and evaluating new and existing techniques.
4.3 Responsible for maintenance and calibration of equipment when working independently.
5. Responsibility - Staff/HR/Leadership & Training 5.1 Assist in training and supervising staff as required.
5.2 Assist in planning work for yourself and others in the team.
5.3 Be familiar with Trust policies such as sickness reporting, leave requests, and health and safety.
5.4 Follow Health and Safety policies to ensure a safe working environment.
5.5 Maintain, update, and develop personal and professional skills through the Trust's appraisal and PDP processes.
5.6 Be involved in appraising junior staff using the Trust's processes.
5.7 Support colleagues and promote team cohesion.
6. Education 6.1 Hold the Specialist Diploma or equivalent in the relevant discipline.
6.2 Undertake training to acquire and maintain core competencies.
6.3 Maintain HPC registration through CPD evidence.
6.4 Develop scientific expertise via CPD within appraisal programs.
6.5 Maintain a portfolio of professional development activities.
7. Responsibility - Information Resources 7.1 Undertake training for electronic information systems.
7.2 Maintain an active email account.
8. Responsibility - Patient/Client Care 8.1 Enter patient information and test results onto the laboratory information system.
9. Responsibility - Research and Development 9.1 Collect audit and research data as required.
10. Freedom to Act 10.1 Act independently within clinical/professional guidelines, consulting senior staff when necessary.
11. Other Duties 11.1 Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade as requested.
Person Specification Qualifications 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a biological science acceptable by IBMS/HPC.
HCPC Registration.
IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent in relevant discipline.
Or 24 months proven post-registration experience in Cellular Pathology.
Skills/Abilities Practical analytical skills for diagnostic laboratory work.
Timely, accurate, and methodical working.
Well organized, precise.
Competent in PC word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Reliable and trustworthy.
Quick learner.
Team player.
Self-motivated.
Flexible in tasks.
Capable of working under pressure.
Experience Full knowledge of Cellular Pathology in relevant discipline.
Evidence of CPD.
Experience with Pathology computer systems.
At least 6 months NHS experience in a busy Histopathology lab.
