Job summary

Our Blood Sciences team operatesa 24/7 service across our three laboratories and we have a fantasticopportunity for an experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join ourteam. This position is based in Chemistry at our Hub Laboratory in Taunton and ourEssential Service Laboratory at Musgrove Park Hospital. You will have the opportunity to work in a laboratory which takes a leading technologicalapproach with state-of-the-art Beckman Coulter automated track and analyticalsystems. The department supports testing for the local NHS trust and primary careproviders.

Our team at SPS have beenfundamental to the principle of making a positive difference to healthcare inSomerset for over a decade. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and arean HCPC approved training Laboratory for both IBMS Registration and SpecialistPortfolios.

Main duties of the job

Asa Specialist Biomedical Scientist within the Chemistry team, you will performand interpret routine and specialist testing providing patient centredscientific excellence whilst maintaining high quality standards in accordancewith ISO15189.

Youwill supervise, mentor and support Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BiomedicalScientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants withinyour department, sharing your knowledge, experience and passion for yourwork. As a registered BiomedicalScientist, you will have the responsibility of maintaining fitness to practiceand participate actively in CPD. SPSwill commit to support you in developing your skills and knowledge in line withyour professional growth and our business interests.

Qualifications

If you have the followingqualifications and skills then wed love to hear from you:

HCPC registration with post registration experienceworking in a Blood Sciences laboratory in a busy Chemistry department. IBMSSpecialist Portfolio in Chemistry Good working knowledge and hands on experienceworking with automated Chemistry platforms.

We will also consider Band 5 applicants looking tocomplete a specialist portfolio with automatic progression to Band 6 uponsuccessful completion.

Job responsibilities

Participatein and assist with clinical trials, the development of new tests and research& validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with allpolicies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and localmanagement policies and practices.

Providetechnical advice to clinical staff.

Toperform and interpret routine and specialist Biomedical investigations and toparticipate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratorysection under the supervision of senior staff.

Togetherwith Senior staff help ensure compliance with all policies as required byregulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management

Utilisethe laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other applicationsoftware according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer dataentry in all areas of the laboratory, document review, non-conformance reviewand quality assurance processes.

Communicateefficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face,telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff whereappropriate. Matters being communicated may include complex information and/orresults.

Attendand participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed byLaboratory senior staff.

Asdirected by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations,training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, respondingappropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.

Encourageactive participation in continuous professional development and support theintroduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate.

Reportall incidents and adverse events to senior staff.

Demonstrate on going competency against trainingplans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development)activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist in Blood Sciences discipline. BSc (Hons) Biomedical degree or equivalent. IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent. EDCL or equivalent IT qualification.

Experience

Essential

Advanced working knowledge of Blood sciences automated techniques and practices including Biochemistry/Haematology/ Coagulation /Immunology and Blood Transfusion analytical platforms. Competency to perform testing and validate results for Blood Sciences disciplines and in Blood transfusion duties to defined protocols. Advanced knowledge of theoretical and practical Blood Sciences techniques and practices.
