Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Medical Writer (PMW) to join our vibrant team in the healthcare communications sector. In this role, you will be responsible for leading content development on your assigned accounts, to the highest quality and in alignment with your client’s brand strategy. An in depth knowledge of publication processes and strategic planning would be an asset. You should embody the principles and best practices of healthcare communications, including industry guidelines and regulatory requirements, and actively champion these among junior colleagues. You will be responsible for maintaining oversight of your team and its output, ensuring adherence to consistently high standards and internal processes, whilst proactively developing their career progression by sharing knowledge and experience. This role is based in our London office with the opportunity for hybrid working.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Accountability:Demonstrate a strong ability to independently make decisions and propose solutions, counselling clients based on knowledge of the therapy area and industry, and work with the internal Senior Management Team to make operational decisions and resolve complex issues
  • Strategic insight:Provide scientific leadership for assigned accounts by confidently implementing detailed strategic direction, demonstrating a high degree of scientific and commercial expertise both within accounts and across the agency, and partner with client services to provide strategic thinking to project delivery and client consultation
  • Senior review:Lead the team to deliver the highest possible standards in scientific excellence throughout the entire delivery process by overseeing the work of junior colleagues; delegating responsibilities and tasks where appropriate; and reviewing work and providing constructive feedback to ensure quality and alignment with the client’s strategy across deliverables
  • Client interaction:Serve as the primary contact for clients on editorial, scientific and/or strategic aspects of your accounts. Lead teams at client events (on-site and virtual), establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships within and across departments
  • Relationship building:Establish, maintain and lead relationships with clients, medical experts and third parties, being able to discuss therapeutic and scientific concepts knowing how and when to adapt language and content, whilst supporting junior team members in developing these skills
  • Project management: Ensure excellence in project delivery and client offerings, ensuring projects meet or exceed expectations and are delivered on time and within budget. Streamline processes, oversee multiple projects efficiently, upskill junior colleagues, and have an awareness of team members’ capacity to help navigate busy periods smoothly. Actively contribute to budget development and understand scopes of work. Collaborate on revenue forecasting and project resourcing with client services. Proactively identify any potential issues and communicate to the Senior Management Team in a solution-driven manner
  • People management:Take accountability for professional development of their team through line management and project/team leadership. Identify and prioritise appropriate opportunities (e.g. internal or external training, project opportunities) for junior team members, and facilitate shared learnings with the team. Partner with HR to identify and proactively address any performance management issues
  • Industry knowledge:Stay informed on industry standards, compliance and innovations. Identify and communicate important industry and therapy area updates to the team, company and clients where appropriate. Have familiarity with how new opportunities and ideas from outside the medical communications industry can be adapted to improve the organizational operation
  • Continuous learning:Own responsibility for your personal development. Regularly look for ways to learn and grow professionally by maximising exposure to new opportunities and making the most of training

Candidate must have:

  • Relevant writing experience in a medical communications/pharmaceutical role
  • A passion for communications and science
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality control
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Strong scientific background, educated to a minimum degree level in life sciences (MSc/PhD advantageous)
  • An understanding of pharmaceutical industry standards and compliance
