Job summary

TheDepartment of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit an experienced AdvancedBiomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry to help shape and improve theservice we deliver to our patients. The successful candidate will work as partof an exceptional laboratory team, which provides both routine and morespecialist assays 24/7 across both hospital sites.

Thesuccessful candidate will play a significant role in the operationalisation oftwo new laboratories in 2025, one of which will be a regional hub. This is aunique opportunity for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful candidate will be a key member of the Blood Sciences managementteam. Reporting to the Service Lead, they will be responsible for theoperational delivery of a 24/7 Biochemistry service across both hospital sites,supported by the wider management team and other key scientific and clinicalstaff.

Candidatesmust be registered with the HCPC, hold an MSc (or level 7 equivalent) and havesignificant experience in the discipline of Clinical Biochemistry at aspecialist level. Employment on annex 21 Band 7 would be considered forcandidates with significant specialist knowledge and relevant experience, whoare working towards the required level 7 qualification. Experience of workingat this level in a similar role, of leading large teams, of qualitymanagement/service improvement and of laboratory automation would beadvantageous for this senior role.

About us

OurPathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals inthe Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around million and provideservices both regionally and nationally. In addition to the new laboratoryprojects, construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is also about tostart, which will include all in-patient maternity and specialist neonatalservices to become the largest single site maternity centre in the UK.

TheDepartment of Blood Sciences has a very engaged multi-disciplinary senior teamand a well-developed quality management system. The successful candidate willbe well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The BloodSciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a traininglaboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology. Toundertake highly specialist clinical technical investigations for thediagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. This will require the complexanalysis, interpretation and comparison of clinical samples.

Toco-ordinate, validate and authorise the day to day technical activities of asection of the laboratory.

Toensure the training of technical, scientific and medical staff within area ofspecialist responsibility.

Tolead where appropriate in quality activities such as audit, EQA review,validation, change and risk management.

Tocommunicate highly complex and / or sensitive information to colleagues andother healthcare staff.

Tolead and be accountable for a section of the laboratory discipline includinginvolvement with HR procedures and deputising for more senior staff whereappropriate.

Inorder to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will havesuccessfully studied for a relevant degree, relevant masters degree, IBMSHigher Specialist Diploma, or equivalent qualification at Level 7 and be a HCPCregistered healthcare scientist. Alternatively, under Annex 21 working towards(up to a maximum of 3 years) relevant masters degree IBMS Higher SpecialistDiploma, or equivalent qualification at Level 7). In addition you will haveextensive experience within the speciality or related discipline. You will havedeveloped a range of competencies and specialist knowledge within thediscipline through extensive practical experience, in house training andstructured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge subjectto the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD).

Tofulfil your people governance responsibilities you will be required to undergoappropriate HR training, for example, in supervisory management. As a seniorstaff member you will be required to assist in the general management of thedepartment, for example in areas such as basic HR functions, appraisal,incident investigation etc.
