Position Summary
The EHS Advisor will promote excellence in EHS performance through the effective implementation of the EHS Management System, ensuring compliance with legal, GSK and other applicable standards while driving continuous improvement through risk management. The role provides technical guidance, training and support to managers and employees, leads incident prevention and investigation activities, monitors and reports EHS performance, conducts audits, and contributes to EHS strategies, plans and procedures.
A key aspect of this role will be providing dedicated EHS support to a manufacturing business unit as it transitions from active operations through decommissioning and ultimately to a safe, compliant end state. The successful candidate will bring experience in complex industrial shutdown activities, including hazardous energy and service isolation, plant and equipment decommissioning, demolition planning, contractor management, and control of high-risk work. They will work closely with operational, engineering and project teams to identify and mitigate emerging risks, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain effective stakeholder engagement, and support the safe execution of all decommissioning and demolition activities while protecting people, the environment, and site assets.
Responsibilities
- Decommissioning & Transition EHS Leadership – Provide EHS leadership for the safe transition of manufacturing operations from active production through decommissioning, dismantling and final site handover, ensuring risks are identified, assessed and effectively controlled. Support the planning and execution of decomissioning and dismantling activities through effective contractor management, permit-to-work oversight and governance of high-risk activities including confined space entry, lifting operations, hot work and work at height.
- EHS Advice & Subject Matter Expertise – Provide practical EHS guidance and support to managers and employees, acting as the site SME for assigned EHS topics.
- Performance Monitoring & Reporting – Manage EHS metrics, adverse event reporting and KPI analysis, identifying trends and ensuring compliance with legal and company reporting requirements.
- Project Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance – Provide technical EHS guidance to project teams, ensuring compliance with legal, company and industry standards while embedding EHS requirements throughout the decommissioning project lifecycle.
- Audit, Assurance & Incident Prevention – Conduct inspections, audits and assurance activities to verify compliance, identify emerging risks, investigate incidents and near misses, and drive timely completion of corrective and preventive actions.
- Stakeholder Engagement, Training & Change Management – Deliver EHS training, coaching and communications to employees, contractors and project teams, fostering a strong safety culture during a period of significant operational change and workforce transition.
Location and working pattern
This role full time on-site and based in the United Kingdom at our Barnard Castle site.

Basic Qualification
We are seeking professionals with the following required skills and qualifications to help us achieve our goals:
- As a minimum the role holder would hold a NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
- Demonstrable knowledge of environmental management systems, environmental legislation and sustainability principles. Experience of environmental compliance assurance, ISO 14001 management systems, waste management, energy reduction programmes, water stewardship or carbon reduction initiatives would be advantageous.
- Ability to influence environmental performance through project support, auditing, data analysis and continuous improvement activities.
- General EHS, Construction, Process Safety, Fire or Occupational Hygiene.
Preferred Qualification
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- The role holder should hold or be working towards a NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent
- Certified audit training to a recognised standard (eg ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISO45001 etc) is preferred for those leading EHS Audits.
