About the Role
As a Molecular Biologist in the GEO (Genetically Engineered Organisms) Team, you will contribute to the design and construction of large-scale synthetic gene loci that underpin our next-generation discovery platforms. Using advanced genome engineering approaches, you will help create highly diverse systems for therapeutic antibody discovery, including bispecifics and VHHs. This role blends thoughtful genetic design with hands-on experimental work to build the scientific capabilities that enable our partners to develop new medicines.
You will utilise the latest technologies and equipment to develop and characterize next-generation research models, supporting the discovery of innovative therapeutics and helping others make better medicines.
Why This Role Is Unique
You will join the Genetically Engineered Organisms (GEO) team and work alongside the broader Alloy ecosystem, including our Antibody Division, 82VS, Bioinformatics, and our extensive network of partners and collaborators. Our team's goal is to develop innovative transgenic platforms to support antibody discovery efforts both internally and for our external partners, ultimately delivering the best medicines to patients.
We are a small, diverse team bringing together a wide range of expertise in genetics, molecular biology, and cellular biology. By working closely with internal colleagues and external partners, we develop next-generation platforms that drive drug discovery research. Supported by various functional groups and a strong network of collaborators and consultants, the GEO team thrives in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Responsibilities
How You’ll Drive Impact
Complex Locus Engineering:Design and implement complex humanization strategies using state-of-the-art technologies to model the human immune repertoire across diverse research platforms.
Quality Control:Apply rigorous scientific judgment to ensure consistency and reliability by critically evaluating data, experimental approaches, and conclusions.
Innovation:Approach scientific challenges with curiosity and an open mindset, contributing new ideas and methods while fostering collaborative problem-solving.
Execution:Take initiative and proactively advance work, demonstrating ownership and accountability while contributing to team success.
Collaboration & Trust:Build strong working relationships by consistently delivering high-quality work, acting with integrity, and supporting shared team goals.
How You Work
Accountability & Drive:You thrive in a nimble, startup-style environment, owning projects from the initial "dry lab" design to the final "wet lab" validation.
Attention to Detail:You apply meticulous attention to detail in scientific thinking and written documentation, and communicate and present information with clarity and precision.
Proactive Approach:You are eager to learn and support the team, bring an independent sense of urgency, and drive projects forward through persistence and a commitment to integrity.
Required Qualifications
Education:PhD in Developmental Biology, Functional Genetics, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Cell Biology or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience (your title will be aligned with your experience).
Immunology:Knowledge of immunology and the ability to perform immunophenotypic analysis of B and T cell populations using multicolor flow cytometry.
Genetic Engineering:Familiarity with genetic engineering and the generation of transgenic animal models, including the design of targeting and screening strategies, vector construction and preparation, data analysis and troubleshooting.
Precision Genome Engineering:Proficiency in CRISPR/Cas9 and advanced integration tools, such as Recombinase-Mediated Cassette Exchange (RMCE) or site-specific integrases (e.g., Bxb1).
Molecular Biology:High proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, western blotting, next-generation sequencing (NGS), plasmid construction and nucleic acid purification.
Comparative Immunogenetics:A good understanding of human immunology and repertoire generation mechanisms across different species, specifically how to engineer for both V(D)J recombination and alternative diversification strategies like gene conversion or somatic hypermutation.
Model Characterization:Experience with the functional validation of new in vivo models, including flow cytometry, cell sorting, and the assessment of serum titers/binder affinity.
Animal Science:Foundational knowledge of animal physiology, husbandry, and genotyping.
Software:Working knowledge of, and the ability to quickly learn, software packages such as Geneious Prime, Benchling and FlowJo
