Structured scientific rotation and leadership development programme Investment in staff development

Principal Scientist, Assay Development, Microscopy, Plant Physiology

A Principal Scientist opportunity has arisen with a fast-growing biotechnology company at the forefront of sustainable discovery science. This is a hands-on, lab-based role with a clear pathway into scientific or team leadership. Could this be the next step that truly advances your research career?

The Role

The Principal Scientist will take ownership of assay design, development, and delivery across plant biology and cell science, working within a structured scientific rotation and leadership development programme. Day-to-day, this involves building and refining mode-of-action assays, developing analysis pipelines with a focus on automation and high-throughput capability, and sharing subject matter expertise in plant physiology across the wider organisation. The Principal Scientist will also support team members in maintaining rigorous experimental records and adherence to laboratory protocols, while collaborating across multidisciplinary project teams to drive efficient, timely outcomes.

The Company

This is an innovative, R&D-led biotechnology business operating at the intersection of life sciences and sustainable product development. The company brings together scientists, technicians, and operational specialists united by a shared commitment to evidence-based discovery. With a collaborative culture, genuine investment in staff development, and an active growth trajectory, this is an environment where talented scientists can thrive and grow alongside the business.

What experience does the Principal Scientist need?

  • A PhD in plant science, or a degree in biology, plant physiology, cell biology, or a closely related field combined with substantial senior-level research experience in plant science
  • Proven expertise in brightfield and fluorescence microscopy, covering both image capture and downstream analysis, alongside a strong grounding in plant physiology and plant cell biology
  • Demonstrated ability to design, build, and deploy assays within a research setting, with experience in automation or high-throughput approaches being advantageous
  • A track record of working across cross-functional teams, communicating effectively on complex topics, and contributing to collaborative scientific goals
