Patent Specialist – Innovative Materials & Technology (Permanent, Full-Time)
Location: Cambridgeshire (Hybrid working available)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Patent Specialist to join a cutting-edge research and innovation company working at the forefront of sustainable materials and advanced technologies. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the organisation’s innovations are protected and positioned for commercial success through a strong intellectual property (IP) strategy.

About the Role

As a Patent Specialist, you will support multidisciplinary research teams by providing IP expertise across a range of emerging technologies. You’ll work closely with scientists, engineers, and external patent counsel to identify inventions, draft and prosecute patents, and manage a growing patent portfolio.

This is a varied and intellectually stimulating position, ideal for someone who enjoys understanding new technologies and translating them into robust IP protection.

Key Responsibilities



Advise and support research teams on IP strategy, patentability, and risk mitigation.

Analyse third-party patents and identify potential risks or opportunities.

*

Coordinate drafting and prosecution of high-quality patent applications with inventors and external attorneys.

*

Manage the company’s patent portfolio and ensure compliance with internal IP processes.

*

Educate research and innovation teams on IP awareness and best practices.

*

Liaise with external counsel, research leads, and global IP teams to ensure alignment of IP and business objectives.

About You

Essential:

*

PhD (or equivalent experience) in Chemistry, Physics, or Biochemistry, or a related field with relevant research or IP experience.

*

Strong interest in intellectual property and innovation management.

*

Excellent analytical, communication, and organisational skills.

*

Ability to understand complex technical concepts quickly and work effectively across disciplines.

Desirable:

*

Experience in patent drafting, prior art or Freedom to Operate searches, or IP portfolio management.

*

Knowledge of IP law and familiarity with patent databases and procedures.
