Contract Offered: Full-time, permanent

Working Hours / Shifts: 4 on 4 off, 10am-10pm

For this position, as you may be in contact with live blood samples, you must be vaccinated against Hepatitis B or be able to get vaccinated, following a successful interview stage.

What does this role involve?

The Shift Manager is responsible for managing the people, resources and performance of their assigned shift within the regional Randox Clinical Laboratory Services (RCLS) laboratory, ensuring that testing is completed accurately, safely and to the required turnaround time. The post-holder holds overall accountability for shift level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC performance, instrument downtime and backlog — taking direct action to resolve issues in real time and reports to the Regional Laboratory Manager for the shift's overall results.

PERFORMANCE OWNERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY

- Manage the people, resources and overall performance of the assigned shift, holding accountability for productivity, quality, turnaround time and safety, and reporting directly to the Regional Laboratory Manager on results achieved.

- Own shift-level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC pass rate, repeat/re-test rate, instrument downtime and sample backlog — driving corrective action in real time whenever performance falls short of target.

- Act as incident lead for the shift, owning the initial response to any incident raised and coordinating other departments through to resolution, keeping the Regional Laboratory Manager informed throughout.

- Act as the primary point of escalation for Shift Leads, taking ownership of issues raised from within the shift and escalating to the Regional Laboratory Manager only where a decision sits outside the post-holder's authority.

- Be answerable for the shift's overall performance results at handover and at regular reviews with the Regional Laboratory Manager, including root cause and corrective action for any KPI shortfall.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Manage the day-to-day running of the shift, ensuring adequate staff cover, effective allocation of equipment and consumables, and adherence to standard operating procedures throughout.

- Manage Shift Leads, setting clear expectations and holding them accountable for their areas, resolving escalations they raise and supporting other shift staff — Clinical Lab Analysts, Clinical Lab Scientists and Lab Assistants — through them.

- Coordinate the shift's response to any incident, directing staff and liaising with other departments — including Clinics, Customer Support, IT and Quality — to ensure it is contained, investigated and escalated appropriately.

- Coordinate with Clinics during the shift on sample collection, courier and specimen queries, ensuring issues affecting sample receipt or turnaround are resolved promptly.

- Coordinate with Customer Support during the shift on client queries, urgent requests and result-reporting issues, ensuring the shift's response supports client service commitments.

- Investigate root causes of testing errors, non-conformances and elevated repeat/re-test rates, taking direct corrective action to reduce recurrence.

- Analyse shift performance data — turnaround times, productivity, error rates, downtime and backlog — on an ongoing basis to identify and drive efficiency improvements within the shift.

- Ensure sample integrity, chain of custody and correct handling procedures are maintained throughout the shift.

- Monitor stock and consumable levels during the shift, flagging shortages to the Regional Laboratory Manager in good time to avoid disruption to testing.

- Ensure all testing carried out during the shift complies with RCLS standard operating procedures and applicable standards, including ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, GCP and MHRA Good Clinical Practice.

- Record and report shift handover information.

Essential criteria:

- Qualified to degree level in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Immunology or a related Life Science, or equivalent relevant laboratory experience.

- Proven experience working in a clinical diagnostic or clinical trials laboratory environment.

- Experience supervising or leading others, whether in a formal management role or as a senior/lead analyst.

- Excellent verbal and written communication and organisational skills.

- Proficiency with standard software packages (Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel) and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

Desirable:

- Previous experience in a Shift Manager, Team Lead or supervisory role within a laboratory setting.

- Working knowledge of quality management systems (e.g. ISO 17025, ISO 15189).

- Experience using LIMS or Q-Pulse reporting to monitor QC, repeat-rate and turnaround-time performance.
