About the Role


UKAS is seeking an experiencedIndependent Technical Assessorwith expertise inVeterinary Microbiologyto support our accreditation assessments in ISO17025 labs. This role involves evaluating veterinary laboratories against accreditation standards, ensuring technical competence, and maintaining high-quality diagnostic testing in microbiology, includingmycology and parasitology.


Key Responsibilities


  • Conducttechnical assessmentsof veterinary microbiology laboratories, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Evaluate the application ofdiagnostic methodologies, includingserological, molecular techniques, and MALDI-TOF.
  • Assess laboratory procedures,sample processing, andreporting accuracyfor veterinary diagnostics.
  • Review theoperation, validation, and maintenanceof laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure laboratories adhere toIQC and EQAbest practices, includingProficiency Testing (PT) schemes.


Essential Qualifications & Experience


  • Degree in Microbiology, Veterinary Microbiology, or a related scientific discipline, incorporating veterinary microbiology principles.
  • Veterinary degree (MRCVS) with microbiology specialisationor relevantpostgraduate qualification(e.g. MSc, PhD, FRCPath in Veterinary Microbiology or equivalent).
  • Significant hands-on experienceinveterinary microbiology laboratoriesor overseeing microbiology diagnostic services.


Key Skills & Knowledge


  • Strong understanding ofmicrobiological testing principlesin veterinary diagnostics.
  • Knowledge ofstandard veterinary microbiology methodsanddiagnostic applications.
  • Experience withIQC, EQA, and PT schemesrelevant to veterinary microbiology.
  • Familiarity withaccreditation standards and laboratory quality management systems.


Desirable but Not Essential


  • Membership of relevant professional bodies such asFRCPath (Veterinary Microbiology Specialism)orInstitute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
  • MRCVS accreditationwith a focus on microbiology.
