We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our busy Immunology team. You will support the team to effectively deliver pathology services to our internal and external service users

Candidates with a Specialist Diploma in Immunology will be on AfC Band 6 Salary
Candidates without a Specialist Diploma in Immunology will be on Annex 21 salary

Main duties of the job

The Immunology department at NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is looking for a confident and motivated Biomedical Scientist to support the laboratory service. The role is a key post, developing and delivering our local and trust strategy. NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is situated in East London and is formed by The Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Hospital, the London Chest Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Homerton Hospital. Lewisham Hospital, Queen Elizabeth, Woolwich Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. The Immunology department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service. We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to assist in supporting this excellent team. You will have experience of working in a pathology laboratory, be organised and work well under pressure.

Working for our organisation

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites. 
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department has state of the art flow cytometry facilities, ELISA processors, Phadia 250 analysers for autoimmunity and allergy, and automated immunofluorescence processors. The department is involved in translational research and had a range of specialist / bespoke manual assays. We are a national referral centre for some biological monitoring tests.

We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of IBMS accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage professional development. The Immunology department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site. The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited, and has full HCPC/IBMS training status.

Essential criteria

BSc. Biomedical Science Registration with the Health Professions Council Evidence of participation in mandatory courses and CPD

Desirable criteria

Holder of IBMS Specialist Diploma in Immunology (for Band 6 position) Expectation to study for IBMS Specialist Diploma in Immunology (for Band 6 Annex 21 position)

Experience

Essential criteria

Post HPC registration diagnostic experience in Immunology Experience with a computerised laboratory information system

Desirable criteria

Experience of a variety of diagnostics techniques in Immunology e.g. ELISA, Immunofluorescence, Flow Cytometry

Knowledge

Essential criteria

H&S legislation and procedures Quality management system

Desirable criteria

Specialist knowledge in Immunology Knowledge of current requirements for training and career progression

Skills

Essential criteria

Competent in routine laboratory techniques and troubleshooting Ability to analyse, interpret and present routine data/results/concepts Working knowledge of a word processing & spreadsheet packages Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
