About

We provide a full range of acute clinical services from Northampton General Hospital and Danetre Hospital in Daventry. We are a designated cancer centre and have recently invested in a number of additional specialist services, including in-patient renal services and interventional cardiology. All elective inpatients and emergency admissions are screened for MRSA. As part of our work to improve clinical outcomes we are taking part in a national patient safety programme and have invested in systems to capture patients views on the service we provide. We understand that sometimes a small change can make a big difference for patients. Our whole focus is on improving the quality of care given to our patients. Job Overview

Specialist Clinical Pharmacist, Emergency Admissions and Urgent Care Band 7
Would you like to work in a vibrant, forward-thinking Urgent Care setting? Do you like the sound of moving your clinical pharmacy skills to the next level? After the successful establishment of dedicated ward pharmacist in Urgent Care, we have a position for a specialist pharmacist.

You will be working within a team of 4 pharmacists in urgent Care fully supported by 3 experienced and knowledgeable band 8a Advanced Level pharmacists. Ideally, you would be an independent prescriber, participating fully in Consultant led board rounds. If you do not meet all the essential criteria for this band 7 post, we may be able to offer a band 6 to 7 progression with a supported training program.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the post include the following:

  1. To provide information, advice and guidance on the safe, effective and economical use of medicines and to challenge poor practice.
  2. To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety; to enforce guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure standards are met.
  3. To fulfil the requirements of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Good Professional Practice.
  4. To optimise medicines management by reconciling drug histories, performing medication reviews, using patients own medicines, counselling and ensuring continuity of care on discharge.
  5. To detect, record and report adverse drug reactions to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and via Datix as per Trust Policy.
  6. To monitor pharmacy interventions and Datix reports to identify training and information needs within Urgent Care.
  7. To participate in CQUINs and QIPPs within Urgent Care.
  8. To identify and implement service improvements within Urgent Care.
  9. To lead and support on the auditing of medicines and prescribing within Urgent Care.
  10. To implement countywide and local prescribing strategies within the Trust.
  11. To facilitate the expansion of the tools within EPMA.
  12. To support the development and implementations of medicine related guidance, policies and procedures within Urgent Care.
  13. To support the process for new medicines being integrated into the Trust by Formulary submissions.
  14. To undertake validation duties in the dispensary.
  15. To supervise, check and, if necessary, undertake the supply of medicines.

Education, Training and Supervision

  1. Act as a role model to the pharmacy team, including supporting junior pharmacist to achieve their objectives.
  2. Attend clinical pharmacy meetings and education/training schemes relevant to post.
  3. To take part in formal and informal education of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals in Urgent Care as well as the wider pharmacy team.
  4. To be a supervisor on the Clinical Pharmacy Diploma course.
  5. To supervise aspects of pre-registration training.
  6. To line manage and lead those staff allocated, undertaking appraisals, supervision and identification of training and development of their skills and knowledge.
  7. To assist in the induction of staff into the service; to help identify training and development needs.
  8. To provide information to patients, parents, and carers on admission and at discharge regarding treatment and medication to optimise patient concordance.
  9. To maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice to ensure a broad base of pharmaceutical knowledge, clinical reasoning and judgement.
  10. To take responsibility for own personal CPD by participating in education and training programmes to improve competence and to develop specialist expertise in Urgent Care area.
  11. To obtain/maintain prescribing qualification and support services and ward rounds as appropriate.

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Post-registration hospital clinical pharmacy experience including at least four of the following specialties.
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Skill mix issues/role of technicians in clinical services.
  • Awareness of interface issues.
  • Teaching, supervising and training staff.
  • Undertaken service improvement / quality improvement projects or audits.
  • NHS arrangements, eg CCGs, NICE, CQC, Clinical Governance.
  • Good clinical knowledge.
  • Appraisals/personal development.

Qualifications

  • MPharm.
  • Member of General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Achieved (or working towards) postgraduate clinical qualification (or equivalent knowledge/experience).
  • CPD portfolio.
