About Carbometrics

Carbometrics is a specialist chemistry company based in Bristol, UK. Our core competency is the design, synthesis and derivatisation of highly selective and robust carbohydrate-binding molecules. Our mission is to help people with diabetes to live more normal and longer lives. We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).
Our technology is based on over 20 years of cutting-edge research, pioneered by Professor Anthony Davis’ group at the University of Bristol (see: Davis et al., Nature Chemistry, 11, 52-56, 2019). Carbometrics’ goal is to exploit our GBM technology to realise a highly robust and accurate glucose sensing platform that can be used to create a market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) solution. The company was set up after the founders sold their first company, Ziylo, to Novo Nordisk, which is using the same platform to develop smart insulins.

About the role

In the last 12 months, Carbometrics has developed and optimised an assay for the quantitation of glucose in aqueous media and in vivo applications. Attention is now being turned towards the sensing of other analytes of clinical significance. The successful candidate will be using their synthetic chemical, analytical and problem-solving skills to synthesise and modify a variety of molecules ranging from small molecules to larger macromolecules such as functional polymers, proteins and RNA/DNA. To thrive in this role, the candidate must be able to work independently, be adaptable to new ideas and change, be resourceful and self-motivated. The role is based within our innovative team in Bristol’s only dedicated scientific incubator: Science Creates. Carbometrics is a young, growing company and will offer the successful candidate an interesting and enjoyable work environment with a highly motivated team of scientists plus an opportunity to grow and develop scientific skills and experience.

Job Description:

As a Senior Scientist in Synthetic Chemistry, you will be responsible for:

• Designing and conducting laboratory experiments in a safe and efficient manner.
• Synthesis, purification and characterisation of small molecules.
• Bioconjugation, modification, purification and characterisation of large molecules.
• Analysing experimental data using the relevant software (e.g. MNova) and maintain an electronic record of experiments (e.g. MBook).
• Using various equipment such as spectrometers (NMR, UV Vis, fluorescence, plate reader), chromatography (Biotage automated flash purification, LCMS, HPLC, size exclusion, GPC), and biophysical techniques such as Isothermal Titration Calorimetry or Surface plasmon resonance (SPR)/Bio-layer interferometry (BLI) etc.
• Contributing to scientific discussions and offering suggestions to push forward new projects.
• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team towards larger objectives.
• Routinely present scientific data and results in a clear and concise manner, as well as communicating these effectively to the rest of the team.

What We're Looking For:

• Qualification at undergraduate or postgraduate level (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) in Synthetic Chemistry.
• Extensive hands-on experience in laboratory settings and knowledge of purification and analysis methods for molecules of varying molecular weight and polarity.
• Ability to manipulate sub-milligram quantities of material.
• Experience in modification of biomolecules and bioconjugation is desirable but not essential.
• Aptitude for troubleshooting experimental issues, interpreting data, and designing alternative approaches to achieve research objectives.
• Eagerness to stay informed about new techniques, technologies, and advancements in the field of chemistry, and the ability to quickly incorporate them into practical work.

Qualifications (required):

• A BSc in an appropriate field is essential (Chemistry/Biochemistry/Chemical Engineering).
• Further qualifications in an appropriate field are desirable (MSc, PhD)

Why Join Us?

• Opportunity to work on groundbreaking technology in glucose monitoring.
• Gain valuable hands-on experience in practical chemistry, biochemistry and photo physics.
• Work in a fast-paced startup environment where your work directly contributes to the company's objectives.

Rural-Remote Biotech Jobs: Making Waves Beyond the Big Cities

A Fresh Outlook for Biotech Professionals When people think of biotech jobs in the UK, their minds often jump to the famous “Golden Triangle” encompassing London, Oxford, and Cambridge—areas historically rich in research institutes, biotech start-ups, and Big Pharma headquarters. While these regions remain crucial to the sector, the landscape is evolving. New technologies, changes in work culture, and the increasing feasibility of remote and hybrid roles are drawing life science professionals away from city centres and into the rural or coastal parts of the country. At BiotechnologyJobs.co.uk, we see more and more postings for roles in beautiful, often overlooked areas—from the hills of North Wales and the rolling landscapes of Yorkshire to the spectacular coastlines of Cornwall and Argyll. Even jobseekers are becoming more adventurous with their search terms, going beyond “lab technician in London” to include lifestyle-driven queries like “tech jobs by the sea” or “biotech remote countryside.” Why are these opportunities emerging now? The COVID-19 pandemic changed perceptions around how research and product development teams operate. Laboratories once thought it essential for everyone to be physically present all the time, but many tasks—particularly in data-intensive or administrative areas—proved workable with remote collaboration. Moreover, biotech itself is diversifying. Marine biology initiatives, agricultural biotech, digital health, and bioinformatics often take place outside city labs, tapping into local ecosystems or farmland as living laboratories. Below, we delve into how biotech professionals can embrace rural or seaside living without sacrificing career momentum. Whether you’re a research scientist hoping to reduce your urban commute, a bioinformatician who can work from anywhere, or a regulatory affairs specialist longing to live near the coast, rural-remote biotech roles offer exciting, career-enhancing possibilities.
