The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) tackles humanity's greatest challenges by turning science and technology into impactful global solutions. The Pathogen Mission highlights EIT's transformative approach, using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and Oracle's cloud technology to create a global pathogen metagenomics system. This initiative aims to improve diagnostics, provide early epidemic warnings, and guide treatments by profiling antimicrobial resistance. The goal is to deliver certified diagnostic tools for widespread use in labs, hospitals, and public health.

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovativeSenior Genomics Scientistto lead the establishment of high-throughput genomics capabilities within our Pathogen Program. This pivotal role will focus on developing and optimising robust sequencing workflows using both short-read (e.g., Illumina) and long-read (e.g., Oxford Nanopore Technologies, PacBio) platforms for the sequencing of pathogens.

The successful candidate will drive the implementation of end-to-end genomics pipelines, from sample preparation through to sequencing and preliminary data analysis, while also supporting method development and scaling through laboratory automation. The scope of work may extend beyond the Pathogen Program, offering opportunities to collaborate across EIT's broader research initiatives. The position includes line management responsibilities, overseeing a team of 2-3 laboratory scientists, and will play a critical role in advancing EIT's mission to deliver cutting-edge genomic science for real-world impact.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, evaluate, and implement high-throughput sequencing workflows for pathogen genomics using short- and long-read technologies
  • Develop and optimise novel protocols and methodologies to address emerging research questions and challenges
  • Lead the integration of lab automation systems to streamline sample preparation and sequencing processes
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the sequencing team, including planning, performance tracking, and mentoring of junior scientists
  • Ensure quality control, data integrity, and reproducibility across all stages of the genomics workflow
  • Coordinate closely with bioinformatics teams to facilitate seamless handoff of data for analysis and interpretation
  • Provide scientific leadership and technical insight to support genomics needs across other programs at EIT
  • Keep abreast of technological advances and recommend adoption of relevant new platforms or strategies

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • PhD in Genomics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Proven track record (5+ years postdoctoral or equivalent industrial experience) in genomics and sequencing technologies
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and troubleshooting NGS workflows, including both library prep and sequencing protocols
  • Experience with Illumina, ONT, and/or PacBio platforms
  • Strong leadership capabilities with prior experience managing laboratory personnel and projects
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience implementing and operating lab automation platforms (e.g., liquid handlers, robotic systems)
  • Proficiency in basic bioinformatics and data analysis, with the ability to build or oversee construction of data processing pipelines
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and standard operating procedures in high-throughput laboratory environments
  • Interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration, including applications of genomics in public health, diagnostics, or basic biology
