We are offering an exciting 12 months Maternity Leave cover as aSenior Scientific Managerto join the DNA Pipelines Research and Development team at Wellcome Sanger Institute.This role will be pivotal in driving forward a wide range of R&D projects by leading a talented team and fostering collaboration across the organisation.

About The Role

As a Senior Scientific Manager, you will have full line management responsibility for a team of experienced staff scientists, supporting their professional development and overseeing the full employee lifecycle—from recruitment to performance management.

In Addition, You Will

  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Technical Development to contribute to strategic planning, project prioritisation, and effective resource allocation.
  • Lead and manage cross-functional collaborations with scientific programmes and operational teams to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality workflows that meet defined objectives.

About You

You will be a proactive and experienced people manager with a strong background in scientific or technical environments. You’ll have a proven ability to initiate, lead, and deliver complex projects to successful completion, on time and within budget. Your leadership style will promote independent working, accountability, and continuous development among your team.

  • Strong organisational and planning abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
  • A flexible and solutions-focused approach, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities

Essential Technical Skills

  • BSc. in a biological science or equivalent experience
  • Leadership skills with experience of delivering change programmes
  • Strong people management skills
  • Proven track record in managing, mentoring and developing others to support independent working and ownership
  • Proven demonstrable experience of working in a technical development environment

Essential Competencies And Behaviours

  • Excellent communication skills across a broad range of stakeholders
  • A flexible and service-oriented attitude
  • Proven ability to deliver quality solutions within fixed timelines
  • Ability to understand and apply new concepts quickly
  • Experience of dealing with rapidly changing priorities

About Us

The DNA Pipelines R&D team is part of Scientific Operations at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Our mission is to support cutting-edge research by developing and delivering high-throughput genomic sequencing technologies.

Our work enables researchers to explore fundamental biological questions—ranging from cancer genomics to biodiversity studies. The DNAP R&D team plays a vital role in piloting and implementing new technologies into routine use, helping to maximise the efficiency and quality of data generation for the institute.
