A Day in the Life

This position will provide highly specialized computational modelling expertise in design and development of innovative products to treat cardiac diseases. The emphasis will be on modelling either cardiac electrophysiological systems to understand pacing and defibrillation therapies or cardiac mechanics to predict forces, stresses and strains within the heart and medical devices subjected to in vivo load conditions. Bearing in mind first principles, the Senior Computational Modelling Engineer will understand business requirements, formulate a modelling approach that will address those requirements, independently carry out the modelling activities and provide concise communication of the results through technical reports and presentations.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
Perform theoretical and finite element analysis (FEA) to predict cardiac system behaviour under in vivo and in vitro types of load conditions
Develop computational FEA models of device and cardiac lead assemblies
Understand physical constraints and use-conditions relevant to the cardiac device/lead and translate them to appropriate boundary conditions in the FEA model
Solve the FEA models to obtain the resultant forces, displacements, stresses and strains
Apply modelling tools to help design and develop new test methods, and integrate new materials and processes
Regularly update methods and implementation to improve efficiency, applicability, and to maintain state-of-the-art practices.
Work collaboratively with cross-functional product development teams to help bring products to market
Required Knowledge and Experience:
PhD in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with an emphasis in FEA
Experience in FEA
Demonstrated knowledge or expertise in cardiovascular physiology
Experience with FEA software such as Abaqus CAE, Ansys, or LS-Dyna
Experience with comparing FEA results with strains and strain imaging techniques like Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
Physical Job Requirements

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this position, but they are not an exhaustive list of all the required responsibilities and skills of this position.
