Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) has been awarded just under £3M From the NIHR to set up a HealthTech Research Centre (HRC). The HRC will support commercial development of innovative solutions for better diagnosis, treatment and care for people across our region.

To manage the research delivery portfolio of the NIHR HRC in Emergency and Acute Care within Research & Innovation (R&I), acting as professional lead for the programme of work. To manage clinical trials administration staff (as and when required). To ensure that comprehensive, high quality and efficient administrative processes are in place for setting up studies, organising necessary approvals (ethics, HRA, local R&D, MHRA, research networks etc.), data management, ensuring full compliance with the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research; including financial management of study set-up costs and income recovery in conjunction with the R&I finance team. To manage relationships with commercial partners and to contribute to the overall running of programmes within the HRC.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as professional lead for the clinical trials administration team by attending Operations meetings and highlighting any risk, issues as appropriate.
  • To manage research studies, ensuring that problems are identified and resolved working within Trust and R&I priorities and deadlines.
  • To liaise with external bodies, such as the LCRN, sponsors, NHS RECs, industry partners
  • Manage industry enquiries to the HRC,
  • Manage the VALIDATE programme and related studies, co-ordinating trial management group meetings and steering group meetings.
  • Works closely with the HRC and R&I management teams to support delivery of the PPIE, Inclusive Research and communications strategies.
  • Support the identification of new grant funding opportunities and opportunities to collaborate with industry.
  • Support the development, organisation and running of events and training which are part of the HRCs deliverables.
  • Makes a major contribution to annual reports and other ad-hoc reports and documents
  • The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of the HRC research delivery in conjunction with the research lead. Close liaison is required between the researchers' leading studies, the sponsors and the Clinical Research Network.
  • To assist senior staff within R&I with study management as required, including grant, business cases and other funding applications to support the work of the Trust.

Person SpecificationEducation

  • Degree in a science or health-related discipline, or a degree in another field with experience in clinical trials, or relevant experience
  • A thorough understanding of the clinical trial process.
  • MSc or an equivalent qualification in clinical trials or a health-related discipline.
  • Evidence of structured managerial training and continuing professional development, a managerial qualification or proven experience

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience in Clinical Trials Management, including set up, financial management, data collection, audit and project management.
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of research governance and related legislation and inspection requirements (e.g. MHRA, HTA).
  • Experience of the governance and approval systems within the NHS and UK CRN for clinical studies.
  • An appreciation of research methodology
  • Research project monitoring.
  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Experience of managing a budget
  • Evidence of writing policies and procedures and evaluating their application in practice.
  • Knowledge of the landscape around innovation development and implementation, and the stakeholders therein (including but not limited to NHS England, NIHR, MHRA, NICE)
  • Understanding of the use of health technologies
  • Awareness of issues around health inequalities, sustainability and digital exclusion
  • Knowledge of funding sources and processes for innovation and research
