This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, rapidly changing neurology service in a regional neuroscience centre, based in a diverse and attractive city. Your role will be key in delivering high quality, accessible care for people with acute and long-term neurological illness.

This post includes a requirement for out of hours working, providing middle-grade cover for Neurology and Stroke (including Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy)

This is a 12 month Fixed Term post

Main duties of the job

This post offers an excellent opportunity to gain ST3 level and above experience within the rapidly changing field of Neurology medicine at NBT, a busy tertiary neuroscience centre.

As part of a consultant led team you will see a wide range of cases. We have excellent neuroradiology at NBT and in addition to daily informal interaction have a weekly meeting to review cases. You’ll be

expected to lead a team of junior doctors (CT/IM/F1/F2) on ward rounds and supervise them on the ward and in ED.

We also participate in our own research as well as recruiting for national trials. There are always projects that you can get involved in, or start developing your own ideas. There will be the opportunity to rotate to sub specialist areas of stroke neurology and general neurology depending on other registrar numbers.

The Department of Neurology at Southmead has a national and international reputation for excellent neurological care and research. We provide specialist neurological care of patients from Bristol and surrounding areas. The department centres around 4 clinical teams which also provide high level sub-speciality care. These teams cover all areas of neurology including Multiple Sclerosis and Neuro-inflammatory disorders, Peripheral Nerve Disease, Neuro-ophthalmology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Cognitive disorders, Neuromuscular diseases and neurovascular disorders including all acute stroke and stroke rehabilitation.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The post holder will have the opportunity to help redesign how acute neurology care is accessed with the aim of improving outcomes for patients at the regional hub in Southmead.

The work undertaken will be a mixture of AMU in-reach, ward liaison, hot clinic/same day emergency care, ward work and neurology outpatient clinics. We are particularly interested in employing an individual who has or, would be interested in developing, a sub-specialist interest and will provide a job plan adapted to permit at least one specialist clinic a week.

Basic qualification

Essential criteria

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • GMC registration
  • ALS up to date

Desirable criteria

  • Prizes
  • MRCP

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Completed pre-registration year (or equivalent outside UK).
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as SHO (or equivalent).

Desirable criteria

  • 4 months experience as SHO in neurology/stroke

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

  • Competent in history taking and examination skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience reading EEGs

Communication / personal skill

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team

Research / Publications

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrate interest in research

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of contribution to published research

Clinical Audit

  • Participated in an audit or quality improvement project
