The role

The Bioinformatics & DRAGEN HW SW department at Illumina is looking for a bioinformatics scientist with experience in algorithm development, statistical modeling, and software development. 

The team is responsible for defining and creating software and workflows for efficient analysis of genetic and epigenetic data, integrating community tools as well as developing novel methods and best-in-class algorithms to be deployed both locally and on Illumina’s cloud computing environment.

The ideal candidate will be able to work in a cross functional team, translating the challenges faced by the group into bioinformatics solutions. The position requires a strong background in algorithm development, bioinformatics data analysis, machine learning, statistics, and software development.

Responsibilities:

Develop algorithms for analysis of various data types and platforms for translational research and clinical applications. Apply statistics, machine learning, and other computational methods to analyze large-scale genetic and epigenetic data, such as genotyping, cytogenetics, DNA methylation, etc. in a fast-paced product development environment. Design and develop software to address novel analytical challenges and to automate established analysis so that thousands of studies can be analyzed in a robust manner. Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position. Changes to individual responsibilities may occur due to business needs.

Required Skills and Experience:

PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Machine Learning or a related field plus 1-3 years of post-doctoral research or industry experience Background in algorithm development, statistical modeling, generative AI, and software development Background in precision medicine and clinical genetics research or product development Deep understanding & practical applications of statistics and bioinformatics algorithms  Critical problem solving and data analysis skills Programming experience with Python and/or R; proficiency in C, C++, C#, and/or Java is a plus Superior written and verbal communication skills All listed requirements are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities.
