Bell Labs' research facility in Cambridge is a leading lab working in the areas of Future Devices, Mobile Sensing and Systems, Embedded Machine Learning, and Internet of Things research. We have multiple openings for multiple Research Scientists in the Pervasive Systems research department. The department studies the forms, intelligence, and applications of mobile, IoT, wearable devices. Our research objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Enhancing compute, communication, and thermal efficiency of the next billion smart devices
  • Building data-efficient, distributed robust and automated device intelligence
  • Designing collaborative, privacy-preserving, and interactive multi-device systems
  • Redefining cross-device and multi-modal UX for spatiotemporal interaction with people, places, and things

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AND WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Are you passionate about solving problems? As part of our team, you will:

  • Carry out ground-breaking research in the areas of Device Intelligence with focus on any combination of the following areas for creating both theoretical innovations and novel practical implementations: (1) data-centric machine learning, (2) multimodal learning, (3) federated learning, (4) foundation models, and (5) large language models (LLMs), with expertise in on-device processing audio, sensor, and time-series data.
  • Publish research for the major research publications worldwide.
  • Propose new innovations and generate device-related patents to help continuing Nokia’s leadership in intellectual property on devices and devices related technologies.
  • Keep an active and visible role in the research community through conference committees and reviewing panels.
  • Create and maintain strong collaborative associations with university-based researchers.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or Electrical & Electronic Engineering, with a strong emphasis on multimodal sensing and machine learning research; PostDoc experience is advantageous.
  • Expertise in Python is required, with hands-on experience using Deep Learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate machine learning models, alongside a deep understanding of best practices for model training, optimization, deployment, and ensuring scalability and efficiency.
  • Solid knowledge of sensory signal processing and advanced machine learning techniques.
  • Familiarity with mobile and embedded operating systems, complemented by practical experience in mobile application development frameworks.
  • A strong research background demonstrated through publications in top-tier journals and conferences in Machine Learning and Mobile Computing, such as CML, ICLR, NeurIPS, MobiSys, MobiCom, UbiComp, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capability to conduct independent, high-quality research.
