Main duties of the job

Following recent success in securing dedicated funding, we are very pleased to be offering a new and exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmology Care Group Pharmacist to work within the Ophthalmology service at University Hospital Southampton eye unit. This post will go hand in hand with a new specialist technician post and offers a great opportunity to broaden your portfolio or deepen a specialist interest working towards consultant level.

Covering all aspects of pharmaceutical care along the patient journey from admission to discharge, the role offers a varied, interesting, and rewarding range of clinical, logistical, and financial tasks. It requires the post-holder to demonstrate strong clinical application of knowledge; team working, clinical governance, and processes; and flexibility and leadership in change management. As this is a new post, the eye unit team is eager to start working with you. While you will be part of a large, friendly, and supportive clinical pharmacy team, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a significant impact on new and improved services.

An independent prescribing pharmacist with significant experience in clinical pharmacy.

Experience in change management and service improvement.

Excellent communication skills, ability to inspire confidence, and work well both independently and as part of a team.

Job descriptionResponsibilities

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Lead and manage projects to support service development.
  • Identify and implement cost improvements related to medication spending in the eye unit.
  • Lead and facilitate biologic switching of current and future biologics.
  • Support education and training to improve medicines optimization in the eye unit.
  • Make autonomous prescribing decisions tailored to each patient.
  • Support patient flow by organizing discharge medications promptly.

We are very proud of our development and utilization of independent prescribing pharmacists. We encourage the successful candidate to fully utilize their skills, working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, joining ward rounds where appropriate, and prescribing for inpatient and discharge purposes. This post is ideal for a pharmacist seeking to progress their career, portfolio, or gain experience in service and change management.

You will collaborate with the newly appointed Specialist Pharmacy Technician for Ophthalmology to improve medicines optimization, support adherence, and counsel on eye drops and other medications. You will ensure appropriate medication prescribing and review, support cost savings, and liaise with supply services to ensure continuity of specialist products.

You will also support pharmacy trainees and staff in understanding and optimizing the use of eye drops and preparations, providing advice and referrals to help patients manage their conditions.

Additional information

This post is offered on a full-time basis (37.5 hours per week), with flexible shift patterns discussed.

Every pharmacist in Division B is expected to do a late-night shift until 7 pm once a week.

All pharmacists are included in the weekend rota, working either Saturday or Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm once every 6 weeks.

Person SpecificationQualifications, knowledge, and experience

  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrate Advanced Stage 1 competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework related to medical or surgical patients.
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of clinical pharmacy services within a suitable specialty.
  • Experience in audit and evaluative work.
  • Teaching and tutoring experience.
  • Experience supervising others.
  • Experience implementing change and change management.
  • Development and implementation of guidelines and procedures.
  • MSc in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience.
  • Leadership qualification or experience.
  • Understanding of healthcare priorities and political agendas.
  • Training in medicines information.
  • Experience managing others.
