Our client Roslin Technologies has an exciting new opportunity for a Bioprocess Engineer to join the team on aninitial 1 year fixed term contract, with the possibility of becoming permanent. Roslin Technologies are based in the Easter Bush Campus of Edinburgh University.


Roslin Technologies is a leading biotech start-up focused on revolutionising food and agriculture through innovative biotechnologies. The mission is to enhance protein production, ensuring global access to affordable, nutritious, and responsibly produced protein. As a leader in alternative proteins, particularly in the rapidly expanding cultivated meat sector, their cutting-edge cell line technologies are crucial in advancing the field.


As a core member of Roslin Technologies' Product Development team, the Bioprocess Engineer/Scientist will support the cultivated meat initiatives, with a focus on stem cell science. Reporting to Jef Pinxteren, VP Development, you will help to ensure the media and process development activities towards customer solutions.The role is important in driving innovation and to lead in the cultivated meat sector, impacting global food systems.


Key Responsibilities:

  • The role focusses on the scaled culture of livestock (porcine, bovine, ovine) induced pluripotent stem cells and downstream processing and nutritional analysis of cell biomass for cultivated meat.

The requirements for this role are:

  • Application of established iPS cell lines (porcine, ovine, bovine) to scaled culture conditions
  • Assessment of suspension growth capability and cell mortality/viability in scaled culture
  • Develop suspension culture conditions for various bioreactors
  • Optimisation of media formulation to reduce cost of goods
  • Nutritional analysis of cell biomass and industry level QC/ QA
  • Optimisation of downstream processing techniques for preservation of live-cell biomass
  • Shelf-life and stability studies of prototype products


Skills & Qualifications:

  • A relevant degree in bioengineering or biological sciences or a related field is essential.
  • Either experience in the field was acquired during a PhD training or by working in a relevant field in a biotech company or service provider.
  • Experience with mammalian stem cells, scale-up or media development is a plus.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining laboratory instruments such as centrifuges, stirred tank bioreactors, CO2 incubators, and thermocyclers.
  • Proficiency in Office applications and ELN/LIMS systems (electronic lab book/ Laboratory Information Management Systems) are advantageous
  • Strong sterile technique and mammalian cell culture skills.
  • Practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques, cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression, and purification is a plus.
  • Proficient organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Experience in planning and executing experiments, data analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and external parties to align laboratory findings with project timelines and goals.
  • Knowledge of safety policies, waste disposal regulations, and compliance with Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a start-up environment.
