In this hands-on leadership role, you will be at the forefront of scaling up robust, cost-efficient, and safe chemical processes from laboratory to kilo lab scale (up to 60 litres). You will drive process development, technology transfer, and continuous improvement, ensuring smooth transitions from synthetic labs to production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsibility, supervision and monitoring of all development processes within laboratory
  • Planning and scheduling coordination of process development in collaboration with other departments and project manager(s)
  • Hands-on Scale-up of robust, cost-efficient and safe processes from laboratory to ‘kilo lab’ scale (up to 60 litres)
  • Coordinate the development of processes for tech transfer from Synthetic labs to ‘Kilolab’ or Staad production site.
  • Overseeing of EHS within the ‘Kilo Lab’ laboratory whilst maintaining a high standard of order and cleanliness
  • Ascertain the required Safety Risk assessments for scale up processes and the potential impact
  • Documentation of the work in ELNs, Batch Records, reports and transfer protocols
  • Organising the ordering of project chemical requirements
  • Review and recommend new potential equipment or technology for ‘Continuous Improvement Incentive’
  • Recruitment and career development of direct reports
  • Fostering a supportive culture among R&D teams and process development teams across Biosynth

Essential Candidate Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Extensive previous experience in chemical process development and scale-up roles within the pharmaceutical, chemical, CDMO or related industries
  • Experience leading and supporting employees in a process development setting
  • Experienced in the design, development and optimisation of chemistry routes and processes for the scale-up of novel Products, API’s, intermediates and raw materials
  • Experienced in the handling of hazardous chemistry on scale in the ‘Kilolab’ (e.g. inert transfer of flammable solvents & pyrophoric reagents, dealing with release of highly flammable gases etc.)
  • Mastered the use of different isolation/purification techniques such as crystallization, distillation, (automated) column chromatography (normal/reverse phase).
  • Experience in transferring upscaled processes to production and providing ongoing support to production teams
  • Familiarity with process development planning, equipment maintenance, and safety regulations in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and initiate maintenance tasks to ensure operational efficiency
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot process issues during scale-up
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring robust, cost-efficient, and safe processes
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to coordinate shift operations and liaise with other departments
  • Leadership qualities and the ability to motivate and inspire employees to achieve production goals
  • Commitment to safety and cleanliness in the production environment, including adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Desirable Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a kilo lab environment
  • Familiarity with risk assessment techniques, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements for chemical processes
  • Experience with technology transfer processes and documentation requirements for production-scale implementation
  • Knowledge of production equipment operation and troubleshooting techniques to address chemical issues during production
  • Knowledge of SAP and QMS systems
  • Ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders and decision-makers
  • Hands-on attitude and positive mindset (“play to win”).
  • Resilient when faced by challenges and resistant to time pressure.
