Job Description:

A researcher to pursue a PhD degree in LSIP Lab (with PhD enrolment at the University of Trento) in hardware-software co-design of analog neuromorphic accelerators.

The Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) Lab at Hewlett Packard Labs has animmediateopening for a qualified research scientist (PhD student) to work towards a doctoral degree in hardware-software co-design of emerging non von-Neumann computing devices. As the central (international) research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and preparing the resulting technologies for adoption into new and existing markets.

This role is also part of the MSCA doctoral network MINDnet, whose mission is to train 15 Doctoral Candidates, forming the next generation of leading scientists and expert researchers in the field of neuromorphic computing. The network brings together ten internationally leading teams from academia, research centers, and leaders of industry, complemented by six associated partners. The consortium spans over eight European countries, combines experts in five research disciplines – photonics, electronics, nonlinear dynamics, and machine learning –, and has a strong focus on telecom, sensing, geolocation, space, and biomedical applications.

Within HPE, this role will be supported by and collaborate with an international multi-disciplinary team of machine learning experts, experimentalists, fabrication experts, software developers, and computer scientists.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.

  • The ideal candidate is deeply interested and enthusiastic to perform research in the emerging field of optical and neuromorphic computing, specifically from the holistic point of view of hardware-software co-design.

  • Excellent academic record.

  • Team player, self-motivated and independent worker.

  • Strong English writing and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in Python.

  • Expertise in one of the standard machine learning frameworks, such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.

  • Broad knowledge of and practical experience with modern machine learning and optimization techniques.

  • Excellent analytical, numerical, and modeling skills. Broad knowledge of photonics and general physics.

  • Familiarity with optical, (analog electronic) in-memory, and neuromorphic computing.

  • Prior expertise in hardware-software co-design is a plus.

Additional Notes

MSCA requirements: Researchers are not eligible if they already have a PhD or have successfully defended their doctoral thesis. Candidates cannot have resided or carried out their main activity (e.g. work, studies) in Belgium for more than 12 months within the three years immediately preceding their employment start date. Candidates can be of any nationality but may need security clearance prior to commencing their position.
