Wellcome Genome Campus Ltd (“WGCL) is seeking to recruit an Engineering Lead to play crucial role in the development and operation of its renowned scientific research campus.

The Wellcome Genome Campus is a leading genomic research campus and home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute (“Sanger”) and the European Bioinformatics Institute. Sanger is Wellcome’s largest charitable initiative, having founded and funded the Campus and Sanger since 1992. Today, over 2,500 people work at the Campus that comprises c.1 million square feet of space set within a 135-acre estate in Hinxton, 9 miles south of Cambridge. The range of facilities include laboratories and associated research facilities, offices, recreational space including a restaurant, gym and nursery, a hotel and conference centre, residential accommodation and a data centre. The estate is set within a beautiful campus environment.

A major expansion of the Campus is underway with planning consent obtained in 2021 that will see the Campus grow from 125 acres to 440 acres. Plans include the additional development of c.1.6 million square feet of gross research and development space primarily to be used for genomics and bioinformatics related activities, as well as hotel facilities and housing for Campus workers, and new retail, food and drink, health, leisure and education amenities. WGCL is the new company and team formed to lead the Campus and its expansion, and the project is already in full flow, with highway and enabling works underway and the first new buildings on the expansion land starting on site in 2025.

Reporting to the Head of Engineering and Hard FM, the Engineering Lead will join at a transformative time, with a remit to support the delivery of the engineering function through the management of outsourced service providers, ensuring that the engineering standards set by WGCL are delivered to a high standard throughout the campus. The Engineering Lead will also play a key role in supporting the development and implementation of the engineering strategy for the new campus, which is integral in supporting the development of the integrated site expansion plans.

We are looking for a candidate with demonstrable industry experience and a proven track record in engineering leadership roles.
