Job Summary
This is a substantive post for a Consultant Paediatrician with acute and non-acute general paediatric and neonatal skills is required for Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The sub-specialist area of work for this post is in supporting clinical governance activity.

The core components of the post will include outpatient general paediatric and Neonatal follow up clinics, on call and hot week cover of the acute paediatric service and neonatal care.

Applicants must have clinical experience and competencies for the broad range of acute inpatient and outpatient general paediatric problems and expertise of delivery of Neonatal Care.

There are close links with the community paediatric service and emergency department and comprehensive cross service, multidisciplinary and interagency working. The successful candidate will be contracted by the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. They are expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and to comply with the standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In particular, where the Consultant is responsible for the management of employees of the Trust, they will be expected to observe the local employment and human resource policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job
The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Expected Duties Include:

  • Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
  • Any responsibility which relates to a special interest.
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
  • Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance withstanding orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
  • CCT in general paediatrics.

Desirable

  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree.

Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of appropriate competencies and experience to fulfil the duties of the post.
  • At least 2 years general professional training in paediatrics.
  • Usually 5 years Higher Specialist Training.
  • Broad experience of all clinical aspects of acute paediatrics.
  • Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees.

Desirable

  • SPIN.

Management & administrative experience
Essential

  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload.
  • Experience of partnership working across other agencies (Social Services, Education).

Teaching
Essential

  • Ability to teach undergraduate medical students in outpatient clinics, wards and other teaching methods.
  • Support, teach and assess postgraduate paediatric trainees.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role.

Research
Essential

  • Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice.

Desirable

  • Participation in clinical research trials.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Other
Essential

  • Communication skills - to have language competency and communication skills necessary to do the job safely & competently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit.
