BSc (Hons) Medical Biology (Foundation Available) The BSc (Hons) Medical Biology with Foundation course provides a comprehensive understanding of human biology from a medical perspective, covering causes of disease, and methods and technologies used for treatment. The course also highlights key biotechnological principles relevant to medical, biomedical, and pharmaceutical industries. The foundation year (HE3) focuses on developing academic and study skills necessary for higher education and introduces fundamental biological sciences. In the second year (HE4), students explore molecular to organ-level human biology and scientific investigation principles. The third (HE5) and fourth (HE6) years build on these themes through a medical perspective, examining disease causes and treatment technologies, including technology's role in medical research.

Cost Information Years 1, 2, and 3 (delivered at Burnley College): The tuition fee for 2023/24 is £9000 per year for UK students. The Foundation year's fee is £6000.
Entry Requirements Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS Points. BTEC Extended Diploma: Distinction, Distinction, Merit. Access to HE: 112 UCAS points including 15 level 3 credits with distinction in Chemistry or Biology. GCSE: 5 at grade C/4 including Maths & English or equivalent. Face-to-face interview required.
Modules Foundation Year Modules: Principles of Biomolecular Science, Research Skills for Medical Biology, Biology Form and Function. Year 1 Modules: Investigating Science, Personal Development, Molecular and Cellular Basis of Life, Clinical Anatomy, Human Physiology, Introduction to Biochemistry. Year 2 Modules: Research Science, Technology in Musculoskeletal Diagnosis and Treatment, Sports and Exercise Nutrition, Molecular Genetics, Medical Biochemistry, Microbiology. Year 3 Modules: Project, Placement, Cancer Biology, Neurobiology, Disease and Therapeutics.
Assessment Practical exams, written work, and coursework.
Graduates will possess transferable skills suitable for careers in healthcare, biotechnology, research, and pharmaceuticals, including roles in hospitals, clinics, government, charities, education, and sales. Other options include medical science, epidemiology, and laboratory technology. The degree can also serve as a foundation for advanced studies in medicine or postgraduate qualifications. For those interested in medicine, becoming a physician associate (PA) is an option; the MSc Physician Associate Studies at the University of Bolton is available for BSc (Hons) Medical Biology graduates with at least a 2.2 honours degree, completing in two years.
