Job summary

This post is a full-time 12 month Fixed term position for a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Virology, Band 8c based at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Virology department provides clinical services for the Royal Free Hospital, Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital and local General Practice services and satellite haemodialysis units. This is a newly created post that will form an integral part of the Trust's Virology team, currently situated on both the Royal Free Hospital and Barnet Hospital sites. The appointee will join three fellow Consultant Virologists on the Royal Free site, and 5 Consultant Microbiologists / Infectious Diseases Consultants based on the Barnet and Chase Farm sites. This is an exciting opportunity to build on the excellent service currently provided on both sites but with an emphasis on developing cross-site specialist Virology provision. The post will be predominantly based at the Royal Free Hospital site but will provide a cross-site clinical presence for Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals. Liaison and attendance at the main laboratory building in King's Cross, Central London will also form part of the appointee's remit.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Clinical Scientist we would expect an active participation, as part of a rota, in the delivery of the Virology Clinical service ( Virology authorisation, fielding of clinical enquiries, advising on clinical management including infection prevention and control, participation in multi-disciplinary meetings). The role will also involve cross-site management responsibilities and laboratory liaison, and training/teaching of medical and clinical scientist trainees on diagnostics. Participation in the Royal Free Hospital Virology out of hours on-call rota at a 1 in 4 frequency will be expected.

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential

Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist. Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD). Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) in Virology or equivalent.

Desirable

Doctorate level qualification in Virology or a related biomedical science discipline.

Experience

Essential

Post-qualification experience in clinical virology, including diagnostic virology, viral genomics, and antiviral resistance. Proven experience in leading and managing a virology laboratory, including staff management, quality assurance, and financial management. Experience in research and development within virology, including publication of peer-reviewed research. Experience of acting in a clinical advisory capacity within a multidisciplinary team Experience in teaching and mentoring junior staff and students.

Desirable

Experience in developing and implementing new diagnostic tests and technologies.
