Job overview Band 5 Senior Pharmacy Technician – Medicines Management
This post is based on Barnet Hospital of the Royal Free Hospital Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and adaptable Pharmacy Technician with good communication and interpersonal skills to take on this challenging post. Your role will involve working with Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, and other health care professionals on providing Medicines Management services at ward level.
The post holder will support the ward pharmacists to carry out medicines reconciliation for our newly admitted patients and the assessment of patients own drugs. You will support the day-to-day coordination of the satellite pharmacy by providing original pack dispensing, patient counselling and co-ordination of the supply of discharge medicines to our patients.
You will be an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and a qualified Medicine Management Pharmacy Technician. You must have evidence of registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and have good post qualification experience working as a Pharmacy Technician within an NHS Hospital Pharmacy.
Main duties of the job The post holder will ensure that the Medicines Management is delivered in a safe, effective, economic, and timely manner. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that all documentation and procedures are carried out in accordance with current legislation and guidelines.
Medicines Management will include supporting medicines optimisation at ward level. They will support the Pharmacy Technician Specialist (Medicines Management) in developing and maintaining the medicines management service at ward level. This will include the assessment of patients own drugs, medicines reconciliation, providing original pack dispensing, counselling patients about their medicines, top-ups, medicine returns and co-ordinating supply of discharge medicines which includes dispensing TTAs on the wards. The post holder will also support the induction and training of a range of staff, including (but not limited to) Pharmacy technicians, Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) and Trainee Pharmacists (TPs).
Person specification Education & Professional Qualifications BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences and NVQ Pharmacy services Level 3 or equivalent
Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician
Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) or willing to work toward this
QCF A1 workplace assessor award or working towards this
Values Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values
Experience Significant and demonstrable post qualification hospital pharmacy experience
Previous assessable experience/understanding of JAC Pharmacy Computer System (or equivalent)
Computer literate including Microsoft Office software products
Ability and understanding of how to correctly and efficiently obtain accurate medication histories and contribute towards medicines reconciliation
Previous assessable managerial/ supervisory experience and experience in training
Previous assessable experience in recruitment and selection of staff
Skills and Aptitudes Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills (with patients and staff of all levels)
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Demonstrate proven ability to dispense accurately.
Demonstrate proven ability to counsel and give advice to patients/carers on medications.
Excellent understanding of computerised systems of stock control management
Demonstrate ability to prioritise and organise own workload and for staff managed.
Methodical methods of working and good decision - making skills
Demonstrate ability to deal with conflict and complaints (with patients and staff of all levels)
Demonstrate ability to plan, organise & deliver induction & competency based training.
