Summary of the role and the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit

SCTU is a UKCRC registered CTU which is Cancer Research UK (CRUK) core support funded and our growing portfolio of studies, from phase I-III and observational studies, is leading to expansion within the unit. As a UK wide pan-cancer CRUK CTU we have undertaken First-in-Human phase I trial in novel immunotherapies with our partners within the Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) and the UK Clinical Research Facility (CRF) network, translational rich phase IIs linking with cancer discovery colleagues across the UK, to phase IIIs involving 100s of UK recruiting hospitals with partnerships with qualitative and costs effectiveness colleagues, and large early diagnosis trial platforms, with the goal to create the evidence to change practice in the NHS that will benefit our patients.

We further have a broad portfolio of clinical trials and other studies including complex interventions involving mixed methodology at SCTU in a variety of areas including primary care (we are linked with the Southampton NIHR school of primary care), respiratory and critical care (we are linked with the Southampton Biomedical Research Centre), palliative care and a number of other developing areas.

The post holder must have substantial and authoritative practical knowledge and experience in early diagnosis and translational research, supported by detailed understanding. This is likely to have been gained through considerable work experience, including clinical trials and other well-designed studies, as well as formal qualifications equivalent to a PhD in a science-based field.

The post holder will lead the Early Diagnosis and Translational Team, setting quality standards and creating an environment that engages and motivates others. The successful candidate will be expected to foster and maintain strategically important working relationships both within the SCTU, across the University and with wider external stakeholders. The role requires the ability to negotiate effectively on behalf of the SCTU to achieve this, developing and leading key communication strategies and using influence and persuasion to positively develop and agree long-term priorities and strategic plans.

Summary Of The Environment

SCTU, based within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton (a Russell group university ranked among the top 100 of universities globally), has its office in the Centre of Cancer immunology which is based at Southampton General Hospital. Also on site are Southampton ECMC, NIHR BRC, NIHR CRF, basic scientists and a variety of other colleagues we work closely with.
