Position Details

Part Time - 30 hours per week
Fixed Term Contract - Maternity Cover

Role Overview

The Senior Biomedical Scientist will collaborate with other senior staff to oversee daily operations within the Microbiology department. Responsibilities include ensuring a cost-effective, high-quality service by reviewing processes and policies, interpreting laboratory tests, and acting as a line manager and technical advisor to laboratory staff and microbiology consultants.

The Advanced Band 7 Biomedical Scientist in Bacteriology is crucial in delivering a high-quality, patient-centered diagnostic service. Key duties involve managing daily laboratory activities, processing complex microbiological samples, maintaining equipment, leading method evaluations, and supporting audits and quality initiatives. The role requires effective communication, staff training, resource management, and compliance with standards like UKAS, COSHH, and ISO 15189. The post also involves participating in weekend and out-of-hours services and maintaining professional development in line with HCPC requirements.

Core Responsibilities

  • Adhere to laboratory and Trust procedures and protocols.
  • Manage daily work planning and supervise staff providing diagnostic microbiology services.
  • Ensure health and safety compliance according to Trust and laboratory policies, including COSHH regulations.
  • Maintain and operate complex laboratory equipment safely.
  • Maintain competency in bacteriology and participate in ongoing professional development.
